Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unidentified, copper alloy artefact in the form of an open loop with a ferrous extension on one side. The date is uncertain, but the condition of the metal makes a Post medieval date most likely. The loop is circular with a narrow (2mm) gap in the frame. The terminal on one side of the gap is worn to a blunt point, and the other terminal is square. It is unclear whether the gap is damage or intentional. The loop is circular in cross-section except at a point opposite the gap, where there is a curved depression in one face, making the hoop thinner. At one side of this depression is&n…

County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of an Early Medieval cast copper alloy openwork strap end, dating from AD 875 - 1100. It can be classified as Thomas' Class E. Only part of the middle survives. The strap end would have been tongue shaped (rectangular, probably with a rounded closed end). It has a series of holes giving an openwork pattern probably representing either a plant design (Class E type 1) or anthropomorphic decoration (Class E type 2), but not enough survives to tell which. Measurements are; length 25.5mm, width 16.1mm, thickness 2.1mm and weight 2.31g. …

A lead pot mend and a fragment of the ceramic vessel, of probable Roman date, AD 43 - 410. The mend is two discs of lead, one large and oval and one smaller and nearly square. They are joined by a short stem (making the mend H shaped in cross-section) through a hole in the ceramic vessel. Some of the ceramic fabric survives. It appears to be a greyware with frequent quartz inclusions, suggesting a Roman date. Measurements are; length 28.3mm, width 24.2mm, thickness 9.9mm and weight 22.87g.

A length of copper alloy bar of rectangular cross-section, of unknown date, probably Roman - Post Medieval. It has a well developed turquoise green patina. The thickness and width of the bar varies and it is slightly curved. A fragment of a copper alloy strap end or buckle plate or clasp plate, dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1200 - 1400. It is a sub-rectangular plate, tapering towards one end. The narrow end is slightly curved, perhaps where the strap end was folded widthways. If the plate is from a strap clasp, the bend could be where it was folded round the frame. At the wider end are two rivet hole, and there is a third hole or notch in the broken end. The third hole could be a slot for the pin if the plate is form a buckle. The plate is 23.4mm long,12.4mm wide and 0.6mm thick. It weighs…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

An incomplete copper alloy mount, probably a Medieval harness pendant suspension mount, but it could also be a casket mount or other harness mount, dating from AD 1200 - 1500. The surviving part is a shell shaped or perhaps a septfoil terminal, that is convex on the outer face and hollow behind. A rectangular bar extends from the top of the shell, and is broken across a circular rivet hole. The bar is flat, with a hollow reverse. Traces of gilding survive on the front. Unusually, there is no rivet or fixing point on the reverse of the terminal, suggesting it is the end of a longer…

A stone possible gaming piece of possible Roman date, AD 43 - 410. The object is formed from a very smooth circular pebble, identified by the finder as Cornish greenstone. There appears to be a high quartz content.…

Compare WILT-1ED6E5 for style, but it has a different motif. Griffiths (1986, 1) suggests that horse harness pendants typically date to the 13th and 14th centuries but have been traced back earlier to the 12th century, especially circul…
