A lead alloy trade weight dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods. It is shield shaped and the front is decorated with a crowned lis and raised border design. It weighs just under 8oz. The weight has a grey patina with areas of wear and damage. Similar examples can be found in Lead Weights; the David Rogers Collection on page 40 (Biggs and Withers, 2000). They believe this style of weight came into use during the 13th Century but may have continued in use until the end of the Post Medieval period. Compare to PAS record ID: SWYOR-352D55.

A lead alloy Medieval trade weight dating from the 13th century onwards. It is nearly shield shaped, having a rounded base and a peaked top edge. It is decorated on the front face with a Fleur in relief and is plain on the reverse. A large uneven hole has been pierced through the base. At 126g, it is 4 1/2 ounces, so was perhaps intended to be a 4oz weight, or may be a re-used and cut down larger weight. Similar examples can be found in Lead Weights; the David Rogers Collection on page 40 (Biggs and Withers, 2000). They believe this style of weight came into use during the 13th Centur…

A lead alloy probably Post Medieval weight, perhaps a steelyard weight. The weight is ovoid in form, circular in section and has a small hole running through it from apex to apex. At 1lb and 2oz (about 500g but too heavy for the scales) it seems an unusual mass for a standard weight, but was perhaps used for a specific function. The surface is damaged with several grooves and gouges, and the whole has a light grey patina.

A complete cast lead alloy probable line weight of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval (1st to 17th Centuries AD).
The weight is sub-spherical in shape. The central hole is broadly circular and is positioned off centre. It tapers from 4.36mm diameter at one end to 2.96mm at the other. This would seem too small for the object to be a spindle whorl. The weight is cream colour, with an even patina.
This type of weight has been in use for a long period of time and can have multiple functions or uses, particularly for weighting lines used on snares and nets.

A cast lead alloy trade weight dating from AD 1300 - 1500. It is flat, shield shaped, and carries the device of a crowned lis. The crown is open, with bifoliate extremities and a cross-hatched interior; the top of the central fleur of the lis just overlaps the crown's interior. At a weight of 439gm (15.5oz) it is probably a one pound weight. It has, however suffered some damage; there are three deep grooves in the upper side, probably resulting from contact with agricultural machinery. The weight is 74.7mm long, 55.1mm wide and 16mm thick. It weighs 439 gm.

A barrel-shaped lead alloy weight, with a hole through the centre along the long axis. It is of uncertain date, but probably Medieval or Post Medieval. The weight is cylindrical and tapers at each end. It is circular in section and was made by casting in a mould; the casting seal is visible running the length of the weight in two places. This is probably a net weight or fishing weight used for birding, fishing or catching rabbits. It has a tan and grey patina. Similar examples are NARC-064B16 and WILT-08BA92.

A complete Medieval to Post-Medieval lead alloy standing weight. It is a pyramid shaped weight with a sub-square base and four tapering sides from a base width of 20.73mm to an apex width of 6.44mm. The corners are slightly bevelled. There is no existing evidence that this weight had a suspension loop. The body of the weight is rough and pitted and the base of the weight has a concave area round a central area of the same height as the edge. It has a creamy white patina. For a similarly shaped weight, please see PAS record ID: SWYOR-796BF1.

A cast lead alloy Medieval trade weight dating from AD 1300 - 1500. It is flat, shield shaped, and carries the device of a crowned lis on a raised central area. The crown is open, with bifoliate extremities; the top of the central fleur of the lis just overlaps the crown's interior. It has a mass of just over 1lb. There are some patinated scratches on the reverse face. The weight is 85.82mm long, 68.5mm wide and 13.08mm thick.
Similar weights are discussed and illustrated in Biggs and Withers, 2000, Lead Weights: The David Rogers Collection, pages 34 - 40. Compare also SWYOR-0F40D4.

An incomplete lead alloy, probably shield shaped, trade weight dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1300 - 1500. Only the top half of the weight survives, the lower edge being an oblique, patinated and worn sheer cut. The design in relief on the front is a crown withing a border. The part of the weight ouside the border is less thick. With a mass of 241g (8 and a half ounces) and allowing for the missing part, this may have been intended to be an 1lb. It has a well developed yellow grey patina with some recent scratches. Compare SWYOR-B828C8. It is 49.9mm long, 59.9mm wide and 13…

A lead alloy conical standing weight of probable Medieval or Post Medieval date, about AD 1250 - 1800. The weight has a rounded oval base, and is a flattened conical shape. There is a central longitudinal hole through the centre which probably held an iron suspension loop. The weight has a white patina and is covered with dints and grooves. It is 35.1mm tall, and has a diameter of 30.6mm. It has a mass of 145g, so was probably not a standard weight, as it equates to 5 and 1/8th ounces. Alternatively, and allowing for the additional weight of an iron loop, it may have been a half pound…

The underside is flat and unmarked. The weight has a cream-coloured patina. It is 58.6mm long, 47.8mm wide and 22.2mm thick. A cast lead alloy trade weight probably dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1200 - 1500. It is unusually thin, flat and shield shaped. The upper surface is decorated with a faintly moulded crowned fleur. The underside is flat and undecorated. The weight has a well developed yellow patina. A deep scratch ending in a chip in the edge will have resulted in some loss of mass. It is 64.5mm long, 44.5mm wide and 6.6mm thick. 95.4g (3.3oz). At this mass, it seems too light to be a standard 4oz weight. It may originate from before the binary averdupois system was adopted and be a quarte…

A lead alloy possible weight of Medieval or Post Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1700. The object is sub-spherical, flattened on the top and the base, and the top is marked with an incised cross and a recessed dot or pellet in each angle. The object's mass is 15.01g which is just over half an ounce in the Averdupois system. This, and the "official" design emulating a Medieval penny suggest that it was used as a weight, but the onject could also be a gaming counter. It has a yellow grey patina. It is 15mm diameter and 11.5mm. Compare LIN-F21592 and DENO-1D2347. These both have moulded d…

A lead alloy probable shield shaped weight dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval period, about AD 1350 - 1700. The weight is plano-convex and triangular with a rounded apex suggesting it is shield shaped. There is a raised design or mis-cast lump on the face. One corner is chipped and some of the surface is missing. At 18g exactly, it does not appear to fit neatly into the Averdupois sytem of weights, but could be considered as a 12 pennyweight in the Troy system (18.7g) allowing for the slight loss of metal (see page 302 in The Medieval Household, Egan 1998). The weight has a dar…

A cast lead alloy trade weight dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1300 - 1500. It is thick, flat and shield shaped (flat top with curved sides meeting at a point at the base). There is a small, circular perforation in the centre of the upper edge of the shield. The lower border is decorated with oblique grooves. The underside is flat and undecorated. A lead alloy probable perforated weight likely to be of Medieval date. The object is a circular disc with a small (3.6mm diameter) oval hole through the centre. One face is marked with a scratched cross covering the face. There are traces of a very faint cross on the other face. The weight has a well developed white patina. It is 27.2mm long, 23.9mm wide, 3.8mm thick and 16.54g. The mass it does not appear to be a standard one, except possibly for 12 pennyweights at 18.7g (Egan, 1998, The Medieval Household, page 302).
