A lead alloy probable weight. The object is conical, and has a hole running vertically through the centre. There are several old dents on the side and base, and a recent scrape. Lead weights are imperfectly understood and cannot normally the attributed to a specific period. It is hoped that increased recording and further study of these objects will allow better understanding in the future. This one weighs 98.2g, which is not far off three ounces. The hole through this example casts some doubt on its function as a standing weight, yet the hole seems too narrow to allow use as a spindle…

A lead alloy perforated weight, probably a medieval fishing weight. The weight is 58.2mm long, 20.3mm wide and 17.7mm thick. It weighs 68.3g. It is square with concave sides in section and tapers at both ends. One end extends into a simple oval suspension loop. The weight is deeply patinated and is a creamy white colour. Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as often as possible, a large body of data that can be studied will be built up.

A lead alloy probable weight with fragments of a probable iron suspension loop surviving. The date of this object is unknown. The object is a lopsided cone shape with a rounded top and a roughened bottom. It has a diameter of 15.9mm and is 15.4mm thick. There is a small circular hole in the top of the object in which are the traces of ferrous material. It is not clear how far through the object the hole continues. It may reach the base but the rough surface is corroded and the surface is not visible. The object has a deep patina and is yellowish grey in colour. Lead weights are very im…

A lead alloy object which is unidentified. The artifact is roughly cone shaped but with a rounded and faceted lower half and concave sides. The top is also rounded making the shape rather like a pear. The object has a diameter of 22.8mm and is 19.3mm thick. In the centre of the flat base is an irregular sub-triangular hole that extends about halfway into the centre of the object. The function of this object is unknown. It may be a weight and the hole could be to adjust the mass exactly. It could also have contained a copper alloy plug also for fine adjustment. Lead weights are very imp…

Lead alloy possible weight of unknown date. The weight is a narrow shield shape with a loop arching from side to side at the top. The front is convex. The weight is 22.8mm long, 10.3mm wide and 5.4mm thick. It weighs 6.1g (0.2oz). Helen Geake writes: “It is very difficult to establish hard and fast rules with lead weights, as we have little material from excavated contexts to compare. The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle whorls to fishing weights to trade weights.” Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as …

A lead alloy probable perforated weight which may be medieval. The weight is oval in plan and section and has an oval hole in one end. It is 58.9mm long, 23.7mm wide and 12.1mm thick. There are two grooves in both of the two main faces giving a fluted effect. The end opposite the hole is flattened. The function of these perforated weights is still very poorly understood. It is possible that it was used in fishing or industry. It is hoped that by recording as many weights as possible it may reveal more information about them. A similar weight is described in “The Medieval Household”…

A copper alloy trade weight from the modern period. The weight is a circular disc with a raised rim on the top face. It weighs 13.7g or 0.48oz and can be interpreted as a half oz weight. It has a diameter of 27.2mm and is 4mm thick. There are three stamps on the top: a quartered shield with a dagger in the top left quarter at 11 o'clock (for the London Guildhall), a sword at 2 o'clock and a ewer (for the Founder's Company, makers of weights) at 7 o'clock. All stamps are the same way up. The Guildhall stamp was only used from 1826 onwards, but at this time the ewer is supposed to have …

A lead alloy shield shaped weight from the medieval period. The weight is 43mm long, 33.5mm wide and 8.8mm thick. It weighs 68.5g or 2.4oz. This weight does not seem to fit into any of the known systems of measurements, but could be based on a special weight system with which we are not familiar. The weight is a flat triangular plaque with a raised central area on the front, upon which is the design of a fleur-de-lis in relief. This is a common design for this type of weight. It is similar to several weights in “Lead Weights – The David Rogers Collection” (2000) by Biggs and With…

A lead alloy weight which is sub-circular. It is 45mm long, 40mm wide and 7mm thick. It weighs 4 oz. The front is marked with a square stamp bearing the letters “IP” in relief in the centre of the weight. Above this stamp are four stamps in the shape of an outline P. These are arranged across the top of the weight in an uneven line. They probably indicate the value of the weight at four ounces. The division of a pound into 16 ounces took place in the fourteenth century (Biggs and Withers, 2000), but the style of the letters suggests a post medieval date for this example. This objec…

A cast lead-alloy weight, possibly a medieval or post-medieval fishing weight, though this attribution is uncertain as the weight cannot be dated. The weight is flat and tapers slightly, being wider at the bottom than the top. The bottom of the weight has rounded corners and there is a crudely punched oval hole at the narrow end, from which the weight was suspended. It is 39mm in length, 16.5mm wide and 4.5mm thick. It weighs 18.72gm.

A lead-alloy weight set with a silver pendant. Description: The weight consists of a drop-shaped piece of tin-lead alloy, flattened at the ends and set on top with a silver pendant in the form of a convex, bearded man's head with a moustache; length, 28.0 mm. The hair and beard are indicated by more or less vertical grooves. The suspension loop of the pendant is broken off and there are traces of gilding in the grooves and hollows of the decoration. A beaded vertical rib above the man's nose gives a helmet-like appearance to the hair. There is a plug of tin/lead alloy in the centre…
