A cast lead sub-discoid possible weight or ingot, of unknown date, AD 43 - 1900. It is circular with ngled sides and an uneven sloping top face. The reverse has a concavity in the centre where the lead has contracted while cooling. There are no obvious marks. The mass does not fit into any standard systems of weight meaurement. It may be a non-standard weight, or be an ingot - a convenient way to store unused lead. Height: 11.1mm Weight: 70g Diameter: 30.41mm

A neatly made lead weight of unknown date, Roman to Post medieval, AD 43 - 1800. It is a standing pyramidal weight, with a square base and tapering sides meeting at a rectangular apex. There is a hole through the apex, perhaps for suspension. There is a V shaped notch in the top of the weight. The corners between the sides are bevelled, especially in the middle. There is a neat pyramid shaped recess in the base of the weight. The weight is 49.5mm long and weighs 154.55g.  The base is 22.6mm square and suspension hole 4mm in diameter. The mass does not obviously match any standard …

A lead disc, probably a Medieval or Post Medieval weight dating from AD 1250 - 1800. It is circular, with rounded edges and recessed faces. One face has a deep rectangular groove across it, wideneing to a small circle in the centre. It is possible this held an inlay marking the weight with its value. The other face is scratched and may be decorated, but the design is intelligable. The object is 25.2mm in diameter, 5.8mm thick and weighs 24.67g. The mass suggests it may be a slightly underweight 1 ounce weight, perhaps having more mass if there was a missing inlaid 1.

A sub-spherical, cast lead artefact of unknown date, AD 43 - 1900, possibly a perforated weight, a bead, or a spindle whorl. The object is sub-spherical. The ends are flattened and there is a central, oval longitudinal perforation of 6.4mm diameter. The weight is 15.1mm long, 16.9mm in diameter and weighs 17.53g.  Objects of this shape are often suggested to be weights for adding mass, such as net sinkers, line weights, or to weigh down birding nets or snares. It is unlikely to be a spindle whorl, because though spherical whorls are known from the Iron Age and…

A sub-circular domed piece of lead which is probably a weight of unknown date, AD 43 - 1800. There are no visible markings. The object is 42.1mm in diameter, 15.5mm thick and weighs 165.66g. The mass is comparable to a Roman half libra (164 - 168g) and also fairly close to a half pound in the Tower system used from the 1250 (175g). It may also be a weight to add mass rather than for measuring.

A perforated lead weight, or perhaps a tubular lead fixing, of unknown date, AD 43 - 1900. The lead is oval in cross-section and plan, with a very large central perforation. the ends are irregular and may not be complete. The weight is 27.0mm long, 22.9mm maximum diameter and weighs 26.16g. The mass is close to one ounce, but as the object may not be complete, this may be a coincidence. The lead could also be a weight to add mass such as a line weight or net weight. Alternatively, it could be a convenient way to store an ounce of lead, effectively acting as an ingot.

A small barrel shaped perforated lead weight of medieval to Post medieval date, AD 1200 - 1900. It is barrel shaped (oval in profile and circular in cross-section). A central perforation runs the whole length. The mass is exactly 1oz in the Imperial systems, making it highly likely to be a weight. Length: 20.91mm Weight: 28.33g Diameter: 16.85mm Diameter of central perforation: 3.91mm

A perforated lead object, probably a weight of unknown date, AD 43 - 1800. It is a sub-spherical globular object with a concave base and a central hole running through it of 3-4mm diameter, now filled with soil. The object is 20.9mm long, 24.2mm in diameter and weighs 69.49g. The mass does not obviously fit into any standard system of weight measurement, so it is perhaps a line weight or similar, designed to add mass rather than to measure it.

A lead weight of probably Medieval to Post Medieval date, from approximately AD 1250 - 1900. It is piriform (pear shaped) and has a central hole in the base, which probably run right through to the apex. It is not visible at the top due to damage in the form of a deep cut, probably plough damage. The piece has a pitted, pale cream patina. The mass is close to 1.5lb imperial, though it could also be 1.5lb in Mercantile or Avoirdupois. Piriform weights are often thought to be Roman, but the mass of this example does not appear to match to Roman libra. The weight is 61.6mm high,…

A lead possible weight of unknown date, Roman to Post medieval, AD 43 - 1800. It is a neatly cast square plaque of lead, with one face concave, and also have a roughly triangular concavity in one corner, probably a casting flaw. The corner sare rounded and the other faces are plain. It has a cream coloured patina. It is 16.6mm long, 15.1mm wide and 10.1mm thick. 36.2g. The mass does not correspond obviously to the normal standard systems of weighing, so it is possibly this is a weight to add mass, like a paperweight, or it could be a form of ingot - a convenient way to store some spare lead.

A cast lead weight, probably a net sinker or fishing line weight of unknown date, 400 BC-AD 1800. In shape, it resembles a small tube with a hole passing through the middle. Each end is narrower than the middle. The weight is unmarked but there are two scratches or small dents, and an irregular seam wherethe lead was rolled around a string or former is visible. It has a creamy white patina. The weight is 26.8mm long; 9.2mm in diameter at the centre and 6.5mm in diameter at each end. It weighs 11.48g. The weight has a dark brown material at each end, perhaps filling a central hole, bu…

A solid lead hemisphere, perhaps a weight, of uncertain date, probably Medieval to post medieval, AD 1200 - 1900. There is a slight depression in the flat face where the lead has cooled after casting. It is 25.9mm diameter, 10.8mm thick and 40g. This mass does not fit obviously into any standardised weight system, so it is possible that the object is a custom made weight, a weight for adding mass instead of measuring, or an ingot for convenient transport or storage of the lead.

A lead weight of uncertain date, probably Medieval to Post Medieval, AD 1200 - 1900. It is a circular disc, slightly recessed on one face. It has a blocked central hole of 5.3mm diameter. There are four pieces of iron embedded in the weight, at the four cardinal points. Only one is clearly visible, the others being below the surface. The weight has a well developed cream patina. It is 48.7mm diameter, 17.4mm thick and at 259g, it does not fit easily into any standard system of weighing. It may instead be designed to add mass to a rope or net, or act as a counterweight.

A probable lead weight of unknown date, Early Medieval to Post Medieval date, AD 700 - 1900. It is a sub-circular disc of lead, trapezoid in cross section. There are no visible markings on either face. It is 27.5mm in diameter, 4.4mm thick and weighs 22.18g. This is not consistent with any common systems of measurement, except perhaps an Irish Viking ounce of 22-23g, but it could also be a lightweight 1 ounce weight. It has a pale grey patina.

A cast lead weight of uncertain date, probably Roman to Post Medieval (AD 43 - 1800). The weight is a short cylinder with a flat base and an angled top, but straight sides. There is a stub of an iron loop or rivet projecting from the centre of the sloping face. The weight has a smooth white patina. It is 25.5mm diameter, 15.9mm thick and 68.5g. This mass does not obviously match any of the main systems of measurement known. It could be a non-standard weight for a specific purpose, or it could be a weight that was used to add mass to another object rather than for weighing.
