A group of 11 ceramic vessel sherds; 5 wall sherds, 3 base fragments and 3 rim fragments, probably of Roman date, AD 43 - 410. The fabric is soft, orange to light grey with a grey core throughout and a fine texture. The surface is covered in fine striations, probably as a result of the softness of the fabric. It has frequent, very small sand and mica inclusions with occasional pieces of black iron ore. The rims are all the same shape, but appear to be from different vessels. They have an upright, thickened and flanged rim, which appears triangular in cross-section. They are from…

A fragment of a Post Medieval to modern ceramic vessel, probably dating from AD 1800 - 1900. The fragment is irregular and undulating, and is probably part of a waster or a failed vessel. The fabric is fine, very hard and vitrified, light grey in colour, probably a stoneware. The fragment contains a large void, lined with a whiter and smoother fabric. This void probably caused the vessel to fail during firing. At one end, the outer face is covered with very glassy black glaze. The fragment is broadly a semi-circle. It is 40.4mm long, 21mm wide and 11mm thick. 5.6g.

A Medieval ceramic vessel sherd including a lead pot mend, dating from AD 1200 - 1500. The fabric is hard, fine, abraded and orange throughout. It has frequent well sorted quartz and black iron ore inclusion, probably from coal measures clay. There are traces of brown glaze on one face. A rectangle of lead is fixed to the glazed surface, presumably a mend, but the lead does not appear to penetrate to the other face of the sherd. One edge of the sherd appears to be an original edge, and has a spot of glaze on it. The sherd is also very flat, raising the possibility that it is part of a…
