A lead alloy pot mend from a ceramic vessel of uncertain date, AD 43 - 1700. The mend if roughly oval and is H shaped in cross section, being two discs joined by a central stem that went through the hole in the pot. A fragment of soft, light orange ceramic survives within the mend, but is abraded. One face of the mend has on oval depression and a clear thumbprint impressed in it. The mend is 29mm long, 25.6mm wide and 7.5mm thick. 23.57g.

A lead alloy probable leg from a vessel, perhaps an ewer. It probably dates from the late Medieval or Early Post Medieval periods. The leg is obliquely angled, octagonal in section and terminates in a hoof like moulding. The top end is complete and is slightly rounded. It has a circular hole in the end, presumably where the leg was attache to the rest of the vessel. Parallels of ewers with three legs can be seen in the Finds Research Group Datasheet 7; Bronze Aquamaniles and Ewers (1987) by J M Lewis. They date from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The leg is 36.6mm long, 15.52…

A lead alloy probable pot mend of Medieval date. The mend is a lump of lead alloy which is roughly oval in plan, H shaped in section and concave on one face. It has a very narrow space for the wall of the vessel, so was probably from a metal vessel. The lead has traces of a white patina, but is mainly a dull dark grey colour. It is 32.51mm long, 23.7mm wide and 5.47mm thick. It wall of the vessel was about 1.7mm thick. It weighs 18.71g.

A lead alloy repair patch from a vessel of probable Medieval date. The pot mend is an irregular oval in plan and H shaped in section; characteristic of these mends. There is an extra flattened blob of lead alloy on one face. This object would have been used to repair a hole in a ceramic or metal vessel (probably a ceramic one in this case). The vessel wall was 2.5 - 3.5mm thick. The metal has a yellow grey patina.

A lead alloy vessel fragment; a pot mend of uncertain date. The object is a disc of lead alloy which is an irregular circle shape. In section it has an H shape typical of these mends. No ceramic or copper alloy remains attached to the lead, so the nature of the vessel is not known. The wall appears to have been about 2.6mm thick. The surface of the lead is rough and incompletely patinated.

A lead alloy possible mend from a vessel of uncertain date. The piece of lead is sub-circular and lentoid in section. A small oval thicker area on one face may suggest that it was used to seal a hole in a vessel, though the typical H shaped profile is not visible on this piece. The lead is well patinated.

A cast lead lid from a small pot, probably Post Medieval in date. It would have been circular when complete but it now bent out of shape. The upper face is decorated with a design in relief. It consists of a central circle with lines radiating out to the edge. Inside the circle is face with pointed oval eyes, a long nose and a small pursed mouth. It is probably meant to be the sun. The design is clearer on the inside of the object, but this may be due to wear on the outside. The identification or function of this object is by no means certain. As well as the possibility that it the le…

A squashed lead alloy vessel which was probably a bird trough or feeder dating from the post Medieval period. The object has been squashed in on itself and one side has a small rounded hole in it. It does not seem to have had a flat base, but may have been oval. The lead has a creamy/white patina to it. It has a length of 48.02mm, width 44.19mm, thickness 9.91mm and a weight of 113.44g. No markings or signs of decoration are visible. For reference see Egan (2005) Material culture in London in an age of transition p. 129 refs. 616 and 617. Plain examples are believed to date from the 1…

A lead alloy feeding trough from a bird cage dating from the late fifteenth to late seventeenth century. The trough is squashed almost flat, but originally would have been D shaped in section and shaped like an inverted bell in profile. The base of the trough on the outside is decorated with a central motif (possibly an R or a jug) in a circle, flanked by three circumferential lines on each side. The curved side is decorated with a double raised line round the base and the edge of the rim. Very similar but smaller examples can be seen on page 129 of Egan 2005. The trough is 67.27mm lo…

A lead alloy (pewter?) leg from a vessel, probably an ewer. It dates from the late Medieval or Early Post Medieval periods. The leg is hexagonal in section and is 39.33mm long, 25mm wide and 17.2mm thick. The top end is an old break. At the base is a large flat foot in the style of a paw. Parallels of ewers with three legs can be seen in the Finds Research Group Datasheet 7; Bronze Aquamaniles and Ewers (1987) by J M Lewis. They date from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The leg weighs 31.36g.

A lead alloy probable vessel fragment; a leg or foot. The object is roughly pyramid shaped, but has two straight faces that are triangular in plan and one face which is convex. The top is sub rectangular and the bottom is a blunt point. The object is damaged and somewhat misshapen. It is 40.5mm long, 30.7mm wide and 24.1mm thick. It is probably medieval in date.

A lead alloy hollow probable vessel leg. The object is triangular in section and each side is triangular too. It is 24.5mm long, 23.6mm wide and 16.1mm thick. It weighs 6.4g. One corner is broken and is missing. This may be intentional to allow the foot to fit to a rounded vessel, or the object may have had a flat top originally. The top of the leg is open and the foot appears to be hollow, though is now full of soil. The outer surfaces are decorated with scrolls and other rococo ornament, suggesting that the date of the object is post-medieval, probably late seventeenth or eighteenth …
