A lead pot mend and a fragment of the ceramic vessel, of probable Roman date, AD 43 - 410. The mend is two discs of lead, one large and oval and one smaller and nearly square. They are joined by a short stem (making the mend H shaped in cross-section) through a hole in the ceramic vessel. Some of the ceramic fabric survives. It appears to be a greyware with frequent quartz inclusions, suggesting a Roman date. Measurements are; length 28.3mm, width 24.2mm, thickness 9.9mm and weight 22.87g.

A lead vessel repair or pot mend of Roman to Medieval date (about AD 43-1500).  The object is a plug to mend a hole in a vessel wall. The object is composed of an outer sub-circular, concave plate, which tapers inwards to a smaller circular plate that would have attached the plate to the body of the vessel. It is H shaped in cross-section. A small amount of orange ceramic vessel fabric survives in the groove. It is 18.6mm long, 11.5mm wide, 9.4mm thick and 9.1g. The vessel wall would have been about 1.7mm thick. Due to the small amount of surviving potte…

A small lead hollow probably vessel, perhaps a bird feeder, patch box or toy vessel, of Post Medieval date AD 1650 - 1900. The probable vessel is now crushed and fragmentary, with four pieces surviving. The largest piece has a circular base and collapsed sides. One wall is decorated with faint stippled decoration, probably of foliate and foliage designs. Two sheet rectangular pieces also survive, plausibly further pieces of the wall. One is plain and the other has scrolls, foliage and flowers in shallow relief. The final fragmenis a small strip of lead, probably from the edge…

A decorative lead alloy lid handle knob dating from the post-medieval to modern period, AD 1650 - 1900. The knob is probably from a tobacco jar, metal tea-pot or other vessel. The handle is sub-oval with a central bordered circular knop surrounded by eight radiating lentoid petals. From the bottom there protrudes a shank, circular in section, for attaching the handle to the lid. The shank is flanged for attachment. Similar examples are illustrated in G Bailey's 'Finds identified', 2000, page 62, which he dates to the middle of the 17th century. Bailey&nb…

A large fragment flattened lead artefact consisting of an oval shaped disc with scalloped edges, one end of which has broken away in antiquity and is missing. The 'pie crust' edges would have once been vertical walls. The letters I W are impressed into the centre of the oval from the side with the walls. The letters are visible in relief on the other face where they read "W I" but only faintly. Traces of a second identical disc survive, the two having been stacked together. The less complete disc is on the impressed and walled side of the first. It is visible on the walls, and its edg…
