A fragment of a handle from a glass vessel of uncertain date, most likely to be Medieval or Post medieval, AD 1200 - 1900. The fabric is an opaque, dark, almost black colour, but appearing to be very dark brown where it is broken and more translucent. The surface is pitted with small circular depressions and oval depressions which appear to be air bubbles that have been stretched and drawn out during the shaping process. The handle is curved and broken at both ends. It is thicker at the upper end and is D shaped in cross-section, flat on the inner face of the handle. The…

The surface is very smooth and shows no wear, only very few scratches and no oxidisation. The attachment end is circular and is 21.7mm diameter. The face is slightly concave. It then tapers and bends away into a D-shaped cross-section, 11.3mm wide and 7.6mm thick at the break. Length is 43.1mm and weight 11.88g. Tho…

A fragment of glass probably from a bowl or similar vessel of probable Roman date, AD 43 - 410. The fragment is a a rim sherd formed from very dark blue translucent glass with no visible striations or bubbles. The rim is beaded and though the fragment is too small to be confident when projecting a rim diameter, it could be about 120mm. The wall of the vessel also slopes outwards at the top. The fragment is 31.1mm long, 38.9mm wide and 4.4mm thick. 9.2g.

A rim from a small handmade (blown) glass vessel of possible Roman date, AD 43 - 300. Only the rim of the vessel survives. It is everted and rounded and is not perfectly circular. One side of the rim is thicker and wider and this area also has a surface concretion. The fragment is only 15mm long from the top of the rim to the break, but the base of the neck is starting to flare outwards before the break. The glass is a pale blue green colour and there are fairly large oval air bubbles visible. There is slight irridescent patination on both the surface and the break, but the break is n…

A fragment of a glass vessel, perhaps a bottle. The glass is pale green and contains some air bubbles. It is thickly patinated with an iridescent surface. The breaks are also patinated. The fragment curves but has no diagnostic features. It was found in an area producing lots of Roman finds, but it is not certain whether this is Roman or later. The thickness of the wall may suggest a Post Medieval date.

A triangular sherd of blue-green glass which is probably Roman in date. The sherd is the curved and upturned edge of a flat piece of glass. It may be part of the base or foot of a beaker or wineglass. It is 21.1mm in length, 16.9mm wide, and 6.3mm thick. It weighs 1.85gm. A Roman beaker with a base which is thicker at the edge than in the middle, which this sherd could match, is illustrated on page 105 of Romano-British Glass Vessels: a Handbook by Price and Cottam. Vessels of this style date from the late second or third centuries. The sherd is also similar to Roman material in the D…
