Part of a cast copper alloy, two piece, Type B beaded torc, dating from the late Iron Age to the early Roman period, about 100 BC - AD 200. The separate beaded front portion survives. It consists of ten integrally cast beads, and both terminals. Each bead is a thick rounded disc, the edges of which are decorated a narrower collar. The terminals are wider beads and are hollow. The object has a brown patina. The object is 111.8mm long, 41.7mm wide, 14.0mm thick and weighs 119.24g. For similar examples see Worrell (December 2004, unpublished) Iron Age T…

An incomplete copper-alloy probable cruciform bead from a beaded torc of Iron Age date, about 50 BC – AD 150. It is flat, thick and is a quatrefoil in plan. There is a central, rectangular perforation for it to be threaded onto the iron rod. The four lobes are moulded on both faces, so they are thicker at the edges. The resulting hollows extend over the edge and are angled giving a spiral effect. It is worn. It is 16.6mm long, 16.6mm wide and 5mm thick. It weighs 5.6g. Compare GLO-EEB7E3, SWYOR-6F2F5E and YORYM-B9EC9D. See al…

An incomplete copper-alloy probable cruciform bead from a beaded torc of Iron Age date, about 50 BC – AD 150. The bead is cruciform, or quatrefoil, with a flattened central panel through which is a central rectangular aperture. The aperture would have accommodated an iron rod onto which the beads would have been threaded. One lobe of the quatrefoil is missing from this example. Each arm terminates in convex ovate lobes. these appear to be undecorated. The metal has a grey green patina. The bead is 26.6mm long, 15mm wide and 6.5mm thick. 4.1g. …

Part of a cast copper alloy, two piece, Type B beaded torc, dating from the late Iron Age to the early Roman period, about 100 BC - AD 200. Part of the separate beaded front portion survives. It consists of eight integrally cast beads, and part of one terminal. Each bead is a disc, the edge of which is decorated with two curved lines, creating a waisted central panel and elliptical outer areas (lipped). Between the beads are narrower spacers, with transverse ribbed decoration (beaded). One end of the surviving part is solid and oval, apparently broken across one of the spacers. The ot…

A fragment of solid gold rod, possibly part of a torc of Iron Age date, about 350 - 50 BC, but not conclusively so. The object is likely to be over 300 years old. The fragment is a short length of solid gold rod, of oval cross-section, and slightly curved. One flat end appears complete.; it is smooth, but is angled across the rod and is slightly concave. The other end is cut half way through with a shap instrument such as a chisel, and then torn/broken across the thinnest point. The break is rough and shows some small air pockets within the rod, suggesting an imperfect casting. T…

Part of a probable Iron Age or Early Roman copper alloy beaded torc dating from 100 BC - 200 AD. The surviving fragment is four beads cast in one. The two centre beads are biconical, one of the outer beads is more rounded, probably owing to wear and corrosion, and the other has a more rectangular terminal. There is a simple collar between each pair of beads. There is iron corrosion along one side of the object, and testing with a magnet suggests that there is an iron core. It is not clear whether the iron along the edge has corroded from the inside, or whether it is from another objec…

Part of a copper alloy beaded torc dating from the late Iron Age or Early Roman periods, c. 400BC-200AD. The whole of the front section of the torc survives. The moulding consists of 11 graduated beads, the largest in the centre, and two rectangular hollow terminals. Each bead is a central disc with a smaller disc on each side. The beads are joined by integral narrow-waisted portions, which are circular in section. It has a dark green patina and 2 of the beads have shattered leaving only half of each bead in place. It has a length of 100.94mm, width 17.06mm, thickness 9.75mm and a wei…
