A copper alloy probable toilet article of possible Roman or Early Medieval date, AD 43 - 1066. The object is a solid cylindrical shaft resembling a blunt pin. At one end is a flattened trapezoidal head which is 7.8mm wide and 2.8mm thick, with a circular perforation through it of 1.7mm. The shaft is circular in section and bulges slightly from 3.8mm diameter at the head to 4.5mm diameter. The rod is decorated with a group of three circumferential grooves at the widest point. A silver toilet article, probably an ear scoop. The spoon has a "barley-sugar" twisted shaft with a drop-shaped concave spoon. The other end of the twisted stem flattens into a strip which never appears to have been twisted, but which is now distorted. It could once have been formed into a suspension loop. The plain part of the handle tapers from 4.35mm wide at the end of the twisting, to 1.9mm wide at the rounded terminal. The possible ear scoop is 5.6mm wide, 2.24mm thick and about 1.5mm deep in the bowl. The object is 54mm long (but bent) overall and the stem is 2.25mm thick where …

There is wear at the top of the loop, which is 12.9mm external diameter and 7.5mm internal diameter. The neck is moulded into three bands. A copper alloy toilet article probably dating from the Roman period, which is very unusual in being a combination of tools in one object. The body of the item is semi elliptical in profile; just a thin bar in plan and triangular in cross section. The curved edge tapers and has marked similarities to some cosmetic mortars. It is also almost sharp enough to consider use as a razor. The straight edge of this body is the thickest part and the side has been used to house more functions. Half is incised with transverse grooves to form a nail file. The other half has a lengthways groove whic…

A Roman copper alloy ear scoop or other similar toilet spoon. The implement has a small narrow scoop at one end, rather than a round spoon bowl. This has a rounded end and appears to be complete. Above the scoop is a reel moulding or a central rounded element flanked by a collar at each end. The shaft tapers from the reel and is circular in section and only 1.7mm in diameter. The shaft is bent and the end is a patinated break. From the description given in Crummy (page 59), this implement sounds most like a surgical ear scoop. The scoop part is similar to but smaller than that on numb…

A thin copper alloy artefact, probably a toilet or medical implement of Roman or Early Medieval date. The artefact is a sub-rectangular shaft. The upper end is flared and the end is incised with four short grooves on the front. There is a very crisp circular hole in the flared part. The upper part of the artefact is decorated with eight ring and dot motifs. There are two above the hole, next to each other, and six along the upper half of the shaft. Half way down the shaft, the design changes to incised diagonal lines, with some cross hatching. This ends a short distance from the end …
