Object type: PUNCH
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy probable punch, or possible weft beater, pin beater, chisel, or other tool, of possibly Post Medieval date. The tool is a tapering rod of circular section. The wider end of the cylinder is slightly convex and flares slightly, but is not as burred over as many of the examples of tools that were struck, such as chisels, punches and gouges, in Finds from Medieval York. The narrower end is broken across a hole, probably a casting flaw. The break is rough and patinated, but one side of the end is a finished oblique facet. A copper alloy unidentified object which may be a punch. The object is rectangular in section and is 77.9mm long, 12.4mm wide and 10.9mm thick at the widest end. It steps down in size about a third of the way along the bar and then again near the far end. At the narrow end is a small sharp projecting in the form of a flange that runs diagonally across the end from corner to corner. It has been suggested that this is the operational part of the tool which could have been used to engrave soft materials. It is also possible that the flange is in fact just a casting flashing that has not b…

A Copper alloy unidentified object which may be a punch used in leatherwork. The object is circular in section and is 92.4mm long, and 13.7mm in diameter. At one end the object tapers to a blunt point that shows evidence of wear on one side. The object also bends slightly away from this side. The diameter of the object varies along its length. The widest point is about a third of the way along from the pointed end. At this point is an incised groove round the circumference of the object. This appears to be decorative. Above the groove the object tapers again until just before the other…
