A copper alloy artefact, possibly a solidified run from metal working, of uncertain date. The artefact bears a superficially similarity to a metal pin with a globular head, but closer examination reveals longitudinal ridges and striations, and a general unevenness which are not consistent with most pins. At one end is a rounded, asymmetrical terminal which tapers to the shank which is sub-circular in cross-section, with some bulging areas and some narrower areas. The other end is bent to one side and is possibly incomplete. The external face of the curved is concave, making this area …

A lead spill or solidified droplet; waste material from metal working, of uncertain date, probably Medieval to post medieval, AD 1200 - 1800. It is just possible that the item is a blank token. It is sub-triangular in plan, and rounded. One face is flat and the other is rounded with the surface tension of the droplet. It is 20.9mm long, 19.6mm wide and 3.3mm thick. 8.6g. It has a dark cream coloured patina. There are no discernable markings apart from a wide groove across the upper face which is probably post depositional damage.

A piece of probable metal working debris of uncertain date, probably Post Medieval, but possibly Bronze Age to Post Medieval, 1600 BC - AD 1900. The object is sub-rectangular in plan and V shaped in cross-section. The long edges flare so it is wider at one end than at the other. Both short ends appear to be broken. The texture of the metal is bumpy and striations and ripples are visible, perhaps suggesting that it is a stream of metal that has solidified in a V shaped channel, or perhaps that is is another form of mis-cast metal or casting waste. It is 50.1mm long, 32.9mm wide, 15.6mm…

A piece of silver probable metal working debris of possible Early Medieval date. The object is an irregular lump of metal. It is roughly oval in plan and in cross-section, and the surface is faceted and uneven. It is 8.6mm long, 6.7mm wide and 6.1mm thick. 1.31g. Compare SWYOR-8807C1, a collection of metalworking debris from the same area. The object has no dating evidence itself, but is from a known Early-Medieval productive site and is probably evidence for silverworking of that date.

A lead probable casting well from the top of a mould, a piece of metal working debris of unknown date, but possibly a deliberately shaped cone. The object is a cone of lead. The circular face has a rounded edge and a slight depression in the centre. Two opposing sides of the edge are possible trimmed. The sides of the cone are not particularly smooth and the cone ends in a rounded blunt apex. This is the least convincing element if the object is metal working waste, as you would expect the apex to be the start of a runner which would leave a mark where it was trimmed. The object has a…

A lead alloy object, possibly a weight or maybe metal working debris. The object is a disc which is flat onone face and convex on the other, thicker at one side than the other. It may have been created by melted lead alloy solidifying in a circular vessel on a slight angle. There is an indented saltire cross on the convex side, but it does not appear to be deliberately formed. There are scratches on the flat face. The metal has a smooth yellow patina. It is 46.7mm long, 44.8mm wide and 8.5mm thick. 93.2g. The patina is similar to Civil War material from the same area, so a Post Mediev…

One long edge and one short edge are bevelled; the other long edge is broken. The other short edge is a concave curve and is a finished edge, extending to the projection which is broken at the end. It is undecorated and is rectangular in cross-section. 14.4mm long, 9.86mm wide and 1.8mm thick. Weight 1g. 2. Two small pellets of metal of unknown date, probably lead alloy, which are probably the result of metal working in the area. One is a white patinated sub-spherical pellet which is about 4.8mm in diameter and weighs 0.49g. The other is a solid hemisphere of dark grey metal (perhaps unpatinated lead alloy). The flat face is rough and pitted, and the convex face is smooth with pimples at the apex. It is 6.04mm in diameter, 3.9mm tall and weighs 0.48g. Though superficially similar to the many lead alloy weights recovered from this site, these droplets do not have the characteristic depres…

An incomplete plate of silver; possible silver metal working debris or hacksilver. The fragment is sub rectangular and has an irregular rectangular section too. One long edge is broken but the others seem to be complete though rough and unfinished. The faces are bumpy. The metal is dark grey with a slightly reflective surface. The plate is difficult to date alone, but as it is from an Early Medieval site, an Early Medieval date is suggested. A similar example from the same site is the flat bar in SWYOR-67A365. As it is probably more than 300 years old, and made of silver, …
