An incomplete copper alloy Early Medieval girdle-hanger dating from AD 500 - 600. The suspension loop is missing. The shaft is flat and rectangular in cross setion at the top, and decorated with a row of stamped dots down the centre of both faces. The lower part of the shaft is narrower and oval in cross-section. This area is not decorated. At the terminal, the central shaft expands again and is decorated with a border of similar stamped dots. The terminal is a wide transverse bar from which three prongs project backwards parallel with the shaft. The border of dots suggests that the te…

An Early Medieval girdle hanger dating from AD 450 - 600. Only the top of the shaft and the suspension loops survives. The incomplete loop is at 90 degrees to the plane of the shaft. The top of the rectangular shaft is moulded with a square thicker panel, then an panel which is faceted so it is triangular in section, and then a (possibly zoomorphic) moulding. The rest of the shaft is thinner (2.4mm thick) and is decorated with stamped or punched annulets along each edge. The breaks are patinated. The girdle hanger is 43.5mm long, 9.2mm wide and 6.7mm thick. 6.42g. It has a well develo…

A cast copper alloy probable girdle hanger fragment dating from the Early Medieval period, about AD 450 - 600. The surviving fragment is the top of the shaft, immedieately below the suspension loop. It is rectangular in section, flat the the lower broken end, and thickening quickly to almost square in section at the broken top end. The remains of the suspension loop is visible; it is a sideways hole through a projecting tab which is just 2.4mm wide, while the shaft is 5.9mm wide. The lower part of the front is decorated with two surviving ring and dot motifs. The breaks and edges are …

Part of a copper alloy girdle hanger dating from the early Anglo-Saxon period, about AD 400 - 720. There is a broken suspension loop at the top; it is a right angles to the rest of the hanger. There are half round mouldings at the top of the shaft. There are two triple collars. The shaft then reduces in thickness from 4.44mm to 2.73mm. The shaft flares from the suspension loop to the centre where it is lozenge shaped, and then starts to taper but the shaft is broken soon after the centre and the terminal is missing. The shaft is oval in section and is decorated with a row of eight ann…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Early Anglo-Saxon girdle hanger of which only the suspension loop and top of the shaft survives. The break is fairly well patinated. The girdle hanger has a flat rectangular shaft that thickens at the top where there is a semi-circular suspension loop set at an angle of 90 degrees to the plane of the shaft. The suspension loop has a circular perforation. There is no collar dividing the loop from the shaft. The front face of the shaft is decorated with incised lines. From the suspension loop: three transverse lines, an X of double lines, three transverse…

A copper alloy girdle hanger probably dating from the Early Medieval period, probably the late 5th - 6th century. The object is a bar which is rectangular in section, with a suspension loop at one end. This is at right angles to the plane of the bar. Below the loop is a zoomorphic head, probably a horse, with the end of the nose against the loop. The bulbous ears are clear, and there are convex pointed oval ears. A transverse collar separates the animal from the loop. Part of the flat rectangular shaft still survives but most of it has broken away. The surviving area is decorated with…

The object is a bar which is rectangular in section, with a suspension loop at one end. This is at right angles to the plane of the bar. Below the loop is a zoomorphic head, the back of the head against the loop. The snout and ears are clear, and there are curved double incised lines round the ears. A transverse collar separates the animal from the loop. Part of the flat rectangular shaft still survives but most of it has broken away. It has a length of 43.07mm, width 6.54…

A cast, copper alloy, zoomorphic terminal probably from a girdle hanger, dating from the 5th or 6th century. It is in the form of an elongated face of which the upper portion remains, consisting of two crescent-shaped eyebrows, two ringed depressions for the eyes and a raised, central, longitudinal ridge representing the nose. The mouth and chin have broken off in antiquity and are missing. Above the face is a collar delineated by three transverse grooves. Above the collar is an integral suspension loop set at right angles to the plane of the face. The reverse of the pendant is concav…

A copper alloy early medieval possible girdle hanger fragment. It measures 45.7mm x 6.6mm and is bent into a curve. The object is semi circular in section. At one end is possible zoomorphic decoration with two pellets resembling eyes present. The main part of the object appears to be plain, this could possibly be due to the poor condition. The glossy green patina is missing in numerous places. Beyond the zoomorphic terminal is a recessed projection through which is a circular hole but the plate is broken across the hole. This was presumably an attachment either for a suspension loop o…

A copper alloy possible fragment of a girdle hanger dating from the Early Medieval period. Only the suspension loop and part of the shaft survives. The object is 45.4mm long, 7.9mm wide and 7mm thick. It is sub-rectangular and tapers towards the suspension loop. Viewed from the side the object widens towards the suspension loop. The loop itself is damaged with the top missing. There are mouldings that consist mainly of transverse notches across the front face. Much of the detail is obstructed by corrosion and pitting. 10mm from the lower end (which is presumably an ancient break), the…
