A Post Medieval silver dress hook, probably a hat hook, dating from the 16th century. It is probably of Read Class A type 4. It has a flat circular head in the form of a rose. There is a domed boss in the centre, an inner band of petals, and an outer band of six petals, each with a beaded outer edge. There are six small circular holes positioned between the petals, more easily visible on the reverse. The reverse is flat. Soldered to the reverse is part of a separate silver hook. This would probably have been S shaped, but it is broken at the first curve. The part of the hook rest…

A silver gilt heart shaped head from a hat, cap or other dress hook dating from AD 1500 - 1600. The hat hook is cast and is engraved with a central heart inscribed with a single word (sadly illegible, but possibly "Cur" or IHC) and a border inscription, which appears to read "edovr deum" or "edola de mor" or similar. There is a possible quatrefoil above the heart shape and a spring of foliage inscribed at the pointed end in the legend. The lettering is black letter and the outer perimeter of the badge is crenellated. The reverse is flat apart from the scar where the S shaped hoo…

A copper alloy double hooked dress fastener or cloak clasp with a hook at each end and which is 85.8mm long. The fastener is formed from a strip of copper alloy of rectangular section. It reduces in width and is bent into a pointed hook at each end. The metal has a dark brown patina. Double hooked fasteners are described in Bailey (2004) and are dated to the Tudor period. A similar but smaller excavated example is illustrated in Ottaway and Rogers (2002, 2919) and dated to circa 1540. Number 3038 in the Meols catalogue is another similar object, suggested to date from the 16th ce…
