County: North Yorkshire

An iron drawknife of Early Medieval date. The form is distinctively Early Medieval, very similar to number 2449 from Flixborough (Life and Economy in Early Medieval Flixborough, Evans and Loveluck), but without the decorative notch. The blade is thickest in the centre, has a straight blade and a convex back with a rivet hole at each end. This is different from Medieval and later examples which have a tang at each end. There are large lumps of corrosion on one face of the blade which are striated, and may be mineralised wood. The blade is more worn at one end than the other.
