A copper alloy object, possibly part of a cross-guard or quillon from a Medieval to Post Medieval dagger, dating from AD 1300 - 1600. The object is a bar of copper alloy, broken at one end. It has a rectangular cross-section but with a recess in the centre of the back face, so it is a square U shape in cross-section. The back face of the complete end is champfered; cast or cut or damaged at an angle so the upper face is longer than the back. There is no decoration and the metal has a rich green patina. It is 34.5mm long, 12.8mm wide and 6.2mm thick. 15.4g. The surviving recess is 27.8…

An incomplete fragment of copper alloy quillon or cross guard, probably from a dagger or knife dating to the Medieval or Post Medieval period circa AD 1300-1600. The artefact is broadly rectangular in form, consisting of one damaged end and the other end tapering into a blunted point. There is a break across a hole for the tang, with a recess in the underside for the top of a blade. When viewed from the side the quillon is slightly curved downwards. The quillon tapers in width from the broken end, but expands in thickness towards the end with a downward curve. The metal has a pale …

A copper alloy Late Medieval to Post Medieval dagger pommel dating from about AD 1450 - 1550. The pommel is sub-circular and domed with a rectangular slot at the apex to accomodate the tang of the missing blade. The upper hemisphere of the pommel is decorated with six wide grooves, giving the pommel a sexfoil appearence. The lower hemipshere is faceted with six sides, making it hexagonal. The underside is open, leaving a large sub-oval opening. This copper alloy shell would probably have been filled with lead to weight the pommel to balance the missing blade. It is 30.4mm long, 27.4mm…

A copper alloy dagger pommel, dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1150 - 1500. It is in the form of a hollow oblate spheroid with a central, circular perforation on one face (7.1mm diameter) and a larger, square perforation diametrically opposite (9.3mm by 8.6mm). There is no decoration. The pommel is 22.2mm diameter, 16.3mm tall, 13.1g.
A dagger pommel of this type is illustrated in Ward Perkins, 1940, London Museum Medieval Catalogue, plate 8, number 3. See also database records SUSS-0AD1A3, LVPL-BF8C69 and KENT-86B77B.

A flint dagger dating from the Beaker Period of the early Bronze Age, about 2500 BC - 1500 BC, but most likely dating from 2400 BC - 2200 BC. It is an ogival, leaf-shaped blade with four notches in each of the straight sides of the butt. It is formed on light grey, semi-translucent flint. The blade has convex sides meeting at a point. The butt has straight sides and a rounded narrow butt. The notches for hafting are in opposed pairs. The dagger is a shallow pointed oval in cross-section. Both faces are covered with scaled low-angle retouch, with parallel, long, low-angle removals round…

An incomplete Bronze Age blade, probably from a dagger, though possibly a rapier, halberd or sword. The metal is very corroded and pitted, and none of the edges are complete, but it has a lentoid cross-section. From this fragment, it is not possible to narrow down the date, object type or tradition from which this implement comes, but it is certainly Bronze Age. The convex edge does not appears to be a cutting edge which is why it has been identified as a blade fragment rather than as an axe. The object is 78.8mm long, 39.8mm wide, 4.4mm thick. 36.33g.

A cast copper alloy (with a high lead content) pommel probably from a dagger or possibly from a sword, and dating from the Post Medieval period, about AD 1500 - 1700. The pommel has an oval base which is hollow and would have held the tang. It has an internal width of 25mm and thickness of 10.2mm. The two main faces are rectangular with a convex top. They are decorated with ridges and grooves, and across the curved top is a band of incised Xs, possibly with an inlay of niello or similar. There is the stub of a projection on each side face. One break is patinated and one is recent, rev…

An iron whittle tang dagger of probable late Medieval or Post Medieval date, about AD 1400 - 1600. The iron part of the dagger is complete, with both blade and tang surviving. It also has a copper alloy end cap and a copper alloy hilt plate at the base of the hilt, where the blade and hilt meet. The grip is missing - presumably it was made of an organic material which has rotted.
The blade is 142mm long19.4mm wide and 4.6mm thick. It is lozenge shaped in section, being sharpened on both edges. At the hilt end is an area 14mm long whch is not sharpened; this part is rectangular in s…

A domed, cast copper alloy dagger or knife pommel of probable medieval or early post-medieval date, about AD1300 - 1700. The pointed dome shaped pommel is decorated with integrally cast ridges and grooves forming a broad, voided plain cross with a single diagonal ridge extending from the centre of the cross to the rim of the dome in each angle. There are traces of gilding surviving in the hollows. The rest of the metal has a shiny grey patina. The underside is flat and has a ferrous concretion that may be the remains of a tang, though this is not certain. The pommel is 20.3mm in diame…

A complete cast copper alloy ovoid object, probably a pommel from a knife or dagger or a handle from a cane or stick. The object is hollow, oval in plan, ovoid in section and has been cast in one piece. A large circular hole in the base (14mm in diameter) would have allowed the pommel to be attached to the knife, dagger or cane. This example probably dates from the Post Medieval period but could also be late Medieval. The pommel is hollow with walls that are about 3mm thick.

Part of the copper alloy guard from a dagger or small sword of Medieval date. It is probably from a quillon dagger dating from the 13th century.
It consists of a curving metal bar of sub square section, representing just over half of the slot for the blade, and part of one arm. The guard is at its tallest from top to bottom in the centre (18.47mm), where is has a downward pointing decorative lobe and where it is 14.32mm thick from front to back. The slot measures 5.45mm wide and about 32mm long (judging from the surviving half) on the handle side of the guard, but on the undernea…

A cast copper-alloy dagger dating from the Early Bronze Age, about 1900 BC - 1600 BC. It is a flat riveted knife-dagger type. The blade is slightly bent but seems to be almost complete. It has a mid rib on each face and the blade edges are bevelled. The sides of the blade are slightly convex, but are almost straight. At the hilt, they flare outwards and then meet to form a pointed end. A copper alloy rivet survives in the rivet hole on one side of the hilt. It is at the widest point. The other side is damaged and broken across the rivet hole. The rivet has expanded ends and is sub-cir…

A possible Post Medieval pommel from a knife or dagger. The object is half of a sheet copper alloy sphere with a circular hole at the apex, surrounded by a thick collar. The lower half of the sphere is missing, and the remainder has been squashed so that the median band is now bent inwards and triangular in plan. There is a raised and moulded band decorated with short transverse incised lines round the circumference at what was once the widest point. The metal is broken along the lower edges if the band, but a strip of metal survives, enough to show that there was a sheet metal lower …

A cast copper alloy artefact, probably a dagger guard, probably dating from the Medieval or post medieval period. It consists of a thick casting which is quatrefoil shaped in section and tubular, but twisted, so the grooves between the lobes twist along the length of the tube, in a spiral. The tube is 25.7mm long and seems to be complete. The hole through the centre is small and rectangular at one end, but flares to a large rounded aperture at the other end. A cast, copper alloy, post medieval dagger guard, dating from c. 1500-1650. It consists of a rounded bar of metal which widens in the centre to accommodate a rectangular hole running parallel to the long axis of the bar: this would have taken the tang of the dagger. Above the bar, and integral with it, are two loops of metal in the form of a figure eight lying on its side. These loops are not quite complete, just failing to meet at the waist of the figure. The dagger guard has a brown patina with areas of light green corrosion. It is artefact is 43.8mm long, 27.1mm wide, and 6.3mm thi…

A copper alloy dagger guard which probably dates from the medieval or early post medieval period. The guard is sub-triangular with a rounded knop at each end and a raised border. It bows outwards to allow space for a elliptical hole through which the tang would have fitted. It is 52.4mm long, 15.1mm wide and 13.2mm thick. The point of the triangle would probable have pointed down the blade. No close published parallel has been found, but there is a similar example on the database (PAS record NCL-DF2D24), and further examples can be seen on page 39 of the London Museum Medieval Catalog…

A copper alloy sphere which may be a post medieval dagger pommel. The sphere is cast in two halves and it has broken along the join. It has a diameter of 26.2mm and is 24mm thick. There is a circular hole in each end of the sphere. The hole is neat, small (6mm diameter) and central at one end, but the other one is larger (8.5mm diameter), has a slit in one side and is not central. This end is also flattened across an area which is 16mm in diameter. The sphere is hollow and the wall is only 1mm thick. Part of a cast copper alloy guard from a quillon-dagger which is 31.1mm long, 32.1mm wide and 16.9mm thick. Quillon-daggers were most popular during the 13th and 14th centuries, with the earliest example dating to the 13th century. Only the finger stop survives from this example. There would also have been a central block through which the tang would have fitted, and two arms forming the guard.
The finger guard is shaped like a semi-circle in plan with a projection from the centre of the straight side. This would have continued into the main part of the guard. The semi-circle is qui…
