A cast lead cross which is probably Medieval or Post medieval in date, AD 1200 - 1700. It is a solid equal armed cross, flat on the back and bevelled on the front making it triangular in cross-section. There is a flattened pellet in the centre and on the ends of two of the arms. The ends of the arms are also angled. The sides of each arm are decorated in relief with moulded oblique lines on the lower parts, and a centre line along each face longitudinally. The cross is 40mm in both length and width.  It is 7.9mm thick and weighs 40.22g.  Compare NLM-D5FBA3 which notes t…

A cast copper alloy cross panel mount from the left-hand arm of a Medieval altar or processional cross. It dates from about AD 1150 - 1300. The mount is in the shape of a T that is lying on its side. The decoration depicts a winged creature, either an eagle or a winged bull. The head and neck of the creature is visible in the centre, the head is surrounded by a halo. A long pointed wing emanates from the centre and ends the top left hand corner. The body in the lower half of the plate is obscured by corrosion. All of the decoration is recessed and would have been filled with enamel, t…

A lead alloy crude cross of unknown date. The cross is mis-cast and may even be no more than casting waste. It has one arm shorter than the others. The arms are flat on one face (the surface of the lead in an open mould) and rounded on the other face, with a prominent flange round the edge. Except for the flange continuing round the ends of the arms, the cross looks like it could be the solidified metal from casting gates or channels; casting waste. If the intention was to cast a cross of lead alloy, it was never finished and the flanges never trimmed. This may be because the liquid l…

A lead alloy cross of unknown date, but possibly Medieval. It has wide flat arms with rounded terminals and rounded internal angles. The front is decorated with an incised groove along the centre of each arm and crossing in the centre. There is a notch in the end of the upmost arm, and below the notch, a circular rivet hole now containing corrosion. The upper surface is uneven with some incised nicks, and other irregular dimples. The reverse has a similar uneven surface with an irregular circular raised area in the centre and what appears to be a deliberately incised star of six arms …

An unfinished and mis-cast copper alloy cross fragment of probable Medieval date. The mould became misaligned during casting causing the front and back of the object to be offset. There is thus a large casting seam which has not been trimmed. The front of the object is a central raised square with a rounded "arm" projecting from each face. It appears that there should have been a shaft descending from the lowest arm, but this has not cast well at all. The reverse (which is positioned much higher than the front) is in the form of a cross with rounded arms, but there is no detail in the…

A copper alloy and tinned cross or crucifix probably dating from the late medieval or Post Medieval periods. It is 37.2mm long, 26.4mm wide and 6.6mm thick. It weighs 19.55g. The cross has a flat back and ends, but the front is rounded making it semi-circular in section. There are file marks on all the surfaces and it is complete. There is no evidence of attachment. The cross has a glossy grey surface with only a few areas of green patination. This suggests a post medieval date, but examples on the database have tentative medieval dates. There is no example quite like this one.
