It has a collar at one end beyond which is the stub of a circular rivet which would have attached to the vessel wall. The loop has a slightly off centre hole through it to hold the handle; the hole has worn through the side of the lug and measures 5.1mm wide. The lug is 24.3mm long, 14.2mm wide and 8.3mm thick. 12.9g.

A ceramic vessel sherd of Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1500, probably from a chafing dish or similar vessel. The sherd is part of the rim including one of the protruding lugs to support the vessel being heated, and the start of a strap handle. The fabric is grey to buff, hard and irregular in texture, with small grey grit inclusions, some vessicles and occaisional large red (iron ore perhaps) pieces. The sherd is covered with a crazed, purple brown to olive green glaze. The fabric is possibly Humberware. The sherd is 70.2mm long, 46.2mm high, 28.2mm thick. 51.3g.

A fragment of a probable Late Medieval or Early Post Medieval cast copper alloy chafing dish. The fragment consists of part of the rim of the vessel, and the upward projecting and tapering dish-support. The dish support is sub-trapezoidal in section. The fragment has a dark grey green patina.
Lewis (1973, p63-4) describes the type of vessel which he calls type B: "These vessels are cast in one piece and finished on the lathe. The only decorative features are single or double incised girth lines. Bowl and pedestal are about the same depth. The bowl has sloping sides above the cari…

A copper-alloy leg from a post medieval chafing dish. Only the lower part of the leg survives. It is 55.5mm in length, 26.6mm wide, and 5.1mm thick. It weighs 21.47gm. The leg is rectangular in section and has a serpent head terminal. This zoomorphic terminal is the same width as the rest of the leg. The snake has an open mouth with pointed lips, an oval eye and further recessed line forming ears or gills. Perhaps the animal is intended to be a dragon or a dog etc. Chafing dishes date from the 15th or 16th centuries (Geake 2001). The other end of the leg can expand into the female hea…

A copper alloy damaged handle escutcheon from a Medieval or Post Medieval chafing dish, dating from about AD 1400 - 1600. The lug is 28.8mm long, 17.1mm wide and 7.1mm thick. It is a flat plate of metal which is uniformly 7.1mm thick. It is a sub-circular fitting with a sub-circular hole in it which has broken making it look like a hook. From one end projects a sub-triangular element which would have probably butted up against the vessel. A cylindrical projection from the end was probably the rivet fixing the escutcheon to the vessel.
Compare SOM-1CB047 which notes that: "Chafing d…
