A lead header fragment, a piece of casting waste dating from the Post medieval period, about AD 1600 - 1800 and probably formed in the production of lead shot. It is a tall bar of trapezoid cross-section, with two cylindrical runners descending from the wide base. The ends of the runners have been cut at an angle, probably from one cut with a knife. They have been cut at opposing angles. The piece is 32.3mm long, 10.7mm wide and 21.7mm tall. 40.2g. Excavations at Beeston Castle have produced similar 'headers' from shot in two sizes, and was probably produced in scissor-like, m…

A piece of lead, probably solidified spill or a trimmed casting flange from metal working, of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval, about AD 43 - 1900. It is an irregular flat shape, broadly semi-piriform, with a straight edge running from top to bottom half way through the pear like shape. At the wider end there is a concave indentation, with the metal at the rounded side curving round into a point like the tip of the wave, but in plan. The straight edge is thicker than the rest of the object; perhaps the molten metal puddled against a straight edged object. It projects beyond both f…

A group of lead casting waste from making lead shot, of Post medieval date, AD 1600 - 1800. There are four pieces of casting sprue and wells, consisting of the upper well and the individual runners or sprues leading to the (presumed) shot which have been cut off. The sprues are about 4-7mm apart, suggesting the object being cast was small, probably pistol shot or buckshot. The smallest piece has two spues. It is 26.9mm long, 6.8mm wide, 4.3mm thick and weighs 2.56g. The wider casting well has four sprues extending from it. It is 31.6mm long, 26.5mm wide, 8.3mm thick and weig…

Lead probable casting waste of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval, about AD 43 - 1800. It is an oval cone, somewhat asymmetrical, bent to one side at the apex. The sides are faceted and have horizontal striations across them. The wider end has rounded corners and is slightly concave. The narrow end is a chamfered wedge. It may be a casting well. It could also be a crude weight but its mass does not obviously fit into any known systems. It is 22.5mm long, 12.5mm wide and 9.6mm thick. 10.6g. It has a cream patina.

A piece of Late Medieval to early modern lead casting waste, which is 51.6mm long, 11.7mm wide and 5mm thick. 10.8g. The object is a strip of flat lead, rectangular with rounded ends. There is a casting seam along the centre of the reverse, and the stubs of three jets or runners, with a fouth one trimmed off. At some point, the object was bent and straightened in the middle, damaging the patina. The object would have been produced from the late medieval period to the early modern era, about AD 1400-1850. Compare LEIC-BAD4C1.

A piece of lead probable casting waste, of probably Post Medieval date, about AD 1600 - 1800. The object is ent, but appears to be a cylindrical terminal from a larger object, with a casting jet or runner still attached. The object has a circular disc with a raised coller round the edge. Projecting from the centre is a short rounded solid stem, with a collar, perhaps the mouth of a tube on the end. The casting runned projects from the side of the larger disc. The lead has a cream patina. It is 31.2mm long, 18.7mm wide and 10.8mm thick. 9.78g.

A copper-alloy casting well or jet of uncertain date. This well or jet is evidence of casting, being a waste fragment from the process of casting an item made of copper-alloy. The date is uncertain but could range from the Bronze Age to Post Medieval periods. The well is sub-triangular in plan and is 20.6mm long, 19.2mm wide and 14.8mm tall. 6.54g. The top is slightly concave. The lower side is domed, an oval convex, that has a central projection, the runner into the mould. This projection has a rectangular cross-section, and is about 9mm long. The upper surface of the well has a c…

Four lead alloy sprues, jets, wells or headers; pieces of casting waste of unknown date ( AD 43 - 1800). Each object is a square or rectangular pyramid. The wider end would have been the top of the mould. It has rounded corners and a concave surface where the metal has shrunk as is cools. The metal would have run through the feeder into the mould. These objects are the solidified lead from the feeder which have been trimmed form the item being made and discarded. They were found together within 2 square metres of each other. They have a light grey patina. The largest measures 18.8mm…

A piece of lead alloy casting waste. It consists of a feeder and two sprues. The feeder is a cup-shaped (or inverted cone) central element with a casting seam down each side, and a hollow in the centre. This provides a reservoir of molten metal to feed into the mould as the metal inside hardens and shrinks. Projecting from the base are two sprues, one to each side. These are sub rectangular in section. These divide near the bottom, with one fork rising to the side. This may be the outlet or riser where air could escape from the mould as the molten metal was poured in the gate. The end …

A fragment of white metal alloy which is sub-square and is 22.4mm long, 21.6mm wide and 1.8mm thick. The piece appears to be “run-off” from metal working because it is uneven and pitted on one surface, where it formed in contact with the ground, and smooth on the other where it was in contact with the air. The edges are all broken. The composition of the metal is not certain without meteorological analysis, but appears to be similar to pewter in appearance, being grey and shiny, with a reflective top surface. The date of this fragment cannot be certain although a post medieval date…
