A copper alloy Medieval book clasp of the pierced and hinged type (Howsam type A.1.1) dating from around AD 1300 - 1450. It has a folded rectangular plate which is hinged round a bar on a rounded element. There is a circular piercing in the centre of the domed and rounded element. This would have fitted over a peg on the cover of the book. A zoomorphic pierced terminal projects from the end opposite the bar. The circular hole is at right angles to the plane of the rest of the book clasp. The rounded element is smooth and undecorated. The plate is inco…

An incomplete, copper alloy, hinged book clasp dating from the Medieval or early post-Medieval period, about AD 1400 - 1600. It is the catch from a hook and eye type fastening, of Howsam type A.6.2. The fitting is a sheet of copper alloy which is sub-rectangular. One end has two rectangular extensions (but one is missing) which are rolled underneath to form lugs that support a bar of circular section (also missing) round which the hook would attach. A copper alloy, probably incomplete, probable book clasp dating from AD 1400 - 1600. It is a rectangular plate, possibly broken at one end, with a broken projecting tab at the other end which is probably the remains of a wide blunt hook. The front is decorated with a cluster of three concentric rings around a central recessed dot. Two circular rivet holes interrupt this design and may be a later addition, after the rest of the fitting broken away. The long edges appear to be original. On the plain reverse, are longitudinal shallow ripples - perhaps resulting from the method of man…

A silver hinge with a fleur di lys terminal which is probably a Post Medieval book clasp dating from AD 1500 - 1600. The object is a flat plate of silver, 1.5mm thick. At one end are two projecting integral tubes which hold a silver bar at each end, creating a hinged fitting. The plate is decorated with three transverse ridges before the hinge. A Post Medieval to Modern silver corner mount from a thin item such as a wallet or book cover. The mount is L shaped with a curved external corner, and a more shallowly curved internal corner. The ends of the L are curved on the internal perimeter so the ends taper to a point. The mount is U shaped in cross-section, but the back plate is much smaller than the front, being only a few millimetres wide. An incomplete medieval copper alloy hinged plate-and-loop type book clasp (Howsam type A.1.1) dating from the late 14th or early 15th century. There is a small fragment of one loop from the clasp remaining articulating with one side of the bar. An incomplete copper alloy artefact, possibly part of a book clasp of Medieval or Post-Medieval date, about AD 1400 - 1800. It is in the form of a narrow, sub-rectangular strip of sheet copper alloy, broken at one end and tapering to a rolled end (suggested to be an overly bent hook) at the other end. There is no decoration. One long edge may be broken. It is possibly of Howsham type A.3 or A.5 or a later example of unclassified book fitting. The artefact has a smooth, dark green patina. An incomplete, copper alloy, Medieval to Post-medieval book clasp dating from about AD 1400 - 1600. The remaining portion consists of a narrow, rectangular strip of sheet copper alloy, flared at one end and with a curved, blunt hook in the centre of the other end. Two rectangular lobes project sideways from the main body, one on each side, immediately adjacent to the hook and there is another pair of narrower lobes next to the flared end. A copper alloy Medieval object, possibly a book fitting dating from AD 1200 - 1500. The object is a rectangular plate, almost square, which has a large and worn loop, in the same plane as the plate, projecting from one end. At the other end, two lugs project, one at each side, perforated to support an axis bar which is now missing. This bar could have been half of a hinged fitting, or could have been for suspension, as in a chatelaine. The metal is dark green and there are possible traces of a surface coating such as gilding on both faces. It is 28mm long, 15.1mm wide and 4.5mm thick.…

A silver mount, strap fitting or book clasp of Medieval date, about AD 1400 - 1450. It is perhaps most likely to be a book clasp of Howsam type A.7. It is rectangular and has two plates, both the same size, held together by two silver rivets with domed heads, one at each end, both on the centre line. There is also a larger circular aperture in the centre of the plates. The mount is 26.9mm long, 11.7mm wide and 4.2mm thick. 3.13g. It can be compared to number 1060 on page 197 of Egan and Pritchard (1991) Dress Accessories which is the same size and which was found in a context of…

A copper alloy Medieval hinged fitting, probably a book clasp dating from about AD 1200 - 1500. The fitting is sub-rectangular and is composite, being formed of a combined front plate and back plate and a spacer. At one end, the plate is square and hinged. The front plate curves round the end of the object to also form the back plate. There is a slot at the hinged end, so a separate element can form the centre of the hinge, from the missing other part. The plates are rolled round the end of the spacer which presumably has a slot in it. The main body of the fitting is sub-rectang…
