A lead possible apothecary weight of probable Post Medieval date, about AD 1500 - 1800. It is a circular disc with one flat face and one rounded face. There are no visible markings. It has a well developed cream patina. It is 11mm diameter, 4mm thick and 3g. The mass suggests it could be a one drachm weight which has lost a little mass, perhaps an apothecary's weight. It is also possible that it is the remains of an impacted lead shot or pellet or Modern date.

A crudely cast, lead alloy cube, probably used as an apothecaries' weight and dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval period, about AD 1200 - 1800. Probably three faces, and possibly five of the faces, are marked with five shallow circular depressions arranged in a cross. These seem to indicate the value of the weight as being five drachms and the mass being 21.03 grams (324.7 grains) seems to support this (one drachm is 60 grains). The cube is a little distorted and has a cream yellow patina. It is 14.6mm long, 13.6mm wide and 12.7mm thick. This object was originally thought t…

A brass, die-struck, octagonal apothecaries' weight for the value of two scruples dating from 1850 - 1971 AD. The weight is 17.96mm long, 15.31mm wide and 1.15mm thick. It weighs 1.74g. this is rather lighter than it should be, but corrosion has probably caused the object to lose some of its mass. The weight is rectangular with the corners cut off in plan. It has a beaded border and on the obverse it reads "STANDARD" across the top. In the middle is a lion standing on a crown with a diamond shaped design registration mark on each side. These marks are like copyright marks and the d…

A copper alloy apothecaries' weight dating from the post medieval period. It is rectangular and flat and is marked with the symbol for two scruples and a rose on both faces. It is 26.81mm long, 26.21mm wide and 17.47mm thick. It weighs 1.99g. It is thus a little light for its intended weight of two scruples or 2.6g, but the weight is worn. Symbol and rose weights probably date from the 17th century and a very similar example can be seen on page 11 of Apothecaries Weights by Biggs (1994).

A copper alloy apothecaries' weight dating from the Post Medieval period. It is a sub-square shape in plan, and flat and is marked with five annulets on each side as a mark of value, and also has an illegible maker's mark or owner's initials. It measures 14.73mm by 14.65mm and is 4.17mm thick, it weighs 6.30g. It was probably a weight for measuring 5 scruples, which would be 6.5g, which allowing for some corrosion is a fairly close fit. Similar weights for grains can be seen in Biggs' Apothecaries Weights and a similar example on the database is ESS-5716A1. The weight probably dates f…

A copper alloy apothecaries' weight which is sub-square in plan, measuring 10.7mm long, 9.7mm wide and 3.6mm thick. One face is marked with the "traditional" symbol for two scruples and on the other face is the numeral "2" above "Scrupl" written engraved in a script like font. The weight weighs 2.47g which is slightly under the correct weight for two scruples which should be 2.6g. The weight probably dates from the nineteenth century which is when lettering started to be used in addition to the symbols. The weight is dark brown in colour with and is in good condition. Diagonal file ma…
