Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire

A lead spindle whorl probably dating from the early Medieval period, about AD 850 - 1000, of Walton Rogers form A1. The unusually large whorl has a flat upper face and a rounded or domed lower face with straight sides. It has a neat central hole. The metal is crazed and friable. The patina is grey. The object is 34.4mm in diameter, 14.2mm thick and weighs 65.62g. The central hole is 10.4mm in diameter. Walton Rogers dates Form A1 whorls to the early Medieval period, and the size of the central aperture may indicate a date in the late Saxon period onwards.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

A lead weight dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval period, about AD 1200 - 1900. It is shield shaped, like wool weights and trade weights, but unusually thick. There is no visible design or decoration, but there are a few deep, but patinated grooves, probably post-depositional damage. The object is 27.7mm long, 19.8mm wide and 15mm thick. It weighs 54.03g. This is very close to the mass of 1/8lb in the Mercantile system, particularly that of 15 ounces of 29.2g (Egan, 1998, The Medieval Household, page 302), but the weight is likely to have lost mass over time. It may also have be…

A lead spindle whorl of Early Medieval to post-Medieval date. It appears to be Walton Rogers Form A1, suggesting a date of about AD 500 - 850 (owing to the fairly small central aperture). However, traces of cast decoration on the curved face may suggest a later date, up to AD 1600. One face is flat and one is convex. There is a central perforation which has a maximum diameter of 8mm. Traces of a design in relief are visible on the convex face. The artefact has a light cream patina. It is 26.1mm diameter, 10.3mm thick and 28.4g. Walton Rogers (in the Flixborough volume and York Fasicule…

A lead alloy weight of Medieval or Post Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1800. The weight is a flat disc of lead with an incuse design in the upper face. This takes the form of a a deep central circle surrounded by six pointed petels forming a rose or flower design. This motif is enclosed within a recessed circle of small inward pointing triangles forming a border. The sides of the disc are slightly rounded and the reverse is plain. It is 66.9mm diameter, 12.8mm thick and 443g. This is a little less than the mass of a 1 pound weight, which is probably what was intended. Compare WILT-56A…

A lead conical probable weight of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval, about AD 43 - 1800. It is also possible that this object is a gaming piece. The artefact is a slanting cone with an uneven surface. There is a conical hole in the base which extends abouy 5mm into the centre of ther weight. The object has a smooth white patina. It is 14.9mm tall, 18.2mm diameter and 20.02g. Weights can be hard to date due to being a functional artefact, and forms and styles do not alter significantly over time. Weights such as this have been used from Roman through to post-medieval times and nu…

A lead alloy musket ball of post-Medieval date, circa 1600 - 1800. The ball has been flattened into a oval spheroid, probably by impact into a soft material such as wet clay. The ball has a yellowish-grey patina. It is 19.1mm long, 15.9mm wide and 11.8mm thick. 19.49g. The weight suggests that this would have been used in a carbine .
