Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A sub-spherical, cast lead artefact of unknown date, AD 43 - 1900, possibly a perforated weight, a bead, or a spindle whorl. The object is sub-spherical. The ends are flattened and there is a central, oval longitudinal perforation of 6.4mm diameter. The weight is 15.1mm long, 16.9mm in diameter and weighs 17.53g.  Objects of this shape are often suggested to be weights for adding mass, such as net sinkers, line weights, or to weigh down birding nets or snares. It is unlikely to be a spindle whorl, because though spherical whorls are known from the Iron Age and…

A lead weight of probably Medieval to Post Medieval date, from approximately AD 1250 - 1900. It is piriform (pear shaped) and has a central hole in the base, which probably run right through to the apex. It is not visible at the top due to damage in the form of a deep cut, probably plough damage. The piece has a pitted, pale cream patina. The mass is close to 1.5lb imperial, though it could also be 1.5lb in Mercantile or Avoirdupois. Piriform weights are often thought to be Roman, but the mass of this example does not appear to match to Roman libra. The weight is 61.6mm high,…

An incomplete, lead alloy pilgrim's ampulla of Medieval date, about AD 1350 - 1530. The remaining portion consists of the circular body, and flaring neck, but theattachment loops or handles are missing from the sides. Both faces of the body carry decoration. One face is moulded into a scallop shell, a common symbol of pilgrimage. The other face is damaged, a hole and stress fractures obscuring the centre of the design, but a border or radiating ribs is visible. The hole was probably made to release the contents, as the top of the neck is still crimped shut. The whole ampulla is rather…

A rolled strip of lead of unknown date, 200 BC - AD 1900. It is a tightly rolled strip of sheet lead which is about 1.3mm thick and 11.9mm wide, now forming an approximate cylinder of 9.8mm wide and 7.9mm thick. 6.6g. It was initially thought to be a possible Roman 'curse tablet'. However, similar objects such as DENO-21D323 have been compared to examples of verified curse tablets / rolls (http://curses.csad.ox.ac.uk), and are now thought to be of more modern date, and to have functioned as a weight, or simply a convenient lead ingot or offcut. Many examples on the PAS database a…

A cast lead alloy probable trade weight probably dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1300 - 1500. It is sub-triangular with rounded corners, but is probably intended to be shield shaped (flat top with curved sides meeting at a point at the base). The central area is much thicker than the edge. The centre of the top face may once have been decorated but the design is no longer legible. There is a 3.6mm diameter circular perforation in the centre of the shield. A possible steelyard weight of Roman to Post Medieval date, about AD 43 - 1800. It is a globular piece of lead with iron projecting at one end. The iron is bent into a closed suspension loop, though this is in two pieces now. The lead is oval when viewed from the end with the iron, and sub-circular when viewed from the larger sides. Roman steelyard weights are usually biconical, but weights of other shapes may also be Roman, though the steelyard was also used in the Medieval and Post Medieval periods. The lead has a light grey patina and is dented. It is 34mm long, 21.4mm wide and …

A cast lead musket ball of Post-Medieval date, AD 1600 - 1800. At a mass of 15.12g, this was probably a pistol shot. It has been extensively chewed, probably by animals post-deposition. The deep depressions and deformation of shape make any set up or other details impossible to see. The ball has a cream patina. It is 14.9mm diameter and 15.12g. See Harding, 2012, Lead Shot of the English Civil War: a Radical Study.

A lead spindle whorl of Early Medieval to Medieval date, about AD 900 - 1500. It is of Walton Rogers Form B2 with two flat faces of equal size and curved sides. The relatively large central aperture (diameter of 9.8mm) suggests a date range starting in the late Anglo-Saxon period. One face of the whorl is decorated with four incuse marks, each a different shape, impressed deeply into the lead. There is a trapezoid, a V shape, an L shape and a slightly curved line. The other face has a slightly raised rim. The whorl has a diameter of 28.9mm and is 10mm thick. 43.5g. It has a well develo…

A lead Post Medieval seal, probably from a bale of wire, and probably dating from AD 1500 - 1800. The seal is a disc of lead with a projecting loop. Both faces have a raised rim. One face bears a crowned quartered shield. The first and third quarters have three crowns, and the second and fourth have a rampant lion. There may be an escutcheon in the centre. This appears to be the lesser arms of Sweden. On the other face are the conjoined letters "WI" in relief, and in capital letters. A probable musket ball made from lead, dating from the Post Medieval period, about 1600 - 1800 AD. The musket ball has many flattened sides rather than being spherical. This may be because it was case shot or cannister shot, fired in a container with many other balls. The ball is well patinated. Another example of possible case shot is LANCUM-FF3115.
