A complete melon bead made from faience. The surface is worn but traces of the turquoise glaze survive. The bead is sub-spherical, 23mm diameter and 21mm high. It is decorated with 21 raised vertical ribs. The central aperture has an internal diameter of 6.7mm. The bead is Roman, probably 1st to 2nd century AD. A close parallel is known from Castleford (West Yorkshire Archaeology Service, 1998, page 185, no.55). Melon beads form just under half of the total number of beads found in Castleford. Examples of frit are much more common than those of translucent blue glass. They were used i…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An early-medieval copper-alloy probable strap-end cast with openwork Urnes-style interlace patterns showing a profile animal in a figure of eight shape. Two main strands of interlace form the figure of eight. One strand represents the body of the animal, with its head at the top left. The animal has a teardrop shaped eye and a triangular ear. At the back of the creature's head, the strand divides with a thinner part (a 'lappet') looping round the crossed centre of the figure of eight forming a quatrefoil-like openwork pattern. The lappet ends in a curly lobe. The lower loop of the …

County: Wakefield

Nine ceramic vessel sherds which are Roman. Two of the sherds are glued together, and others have been glued but have since become detached again. The sherds are probably all from the same vessel, a mortarium. The fabric is a bright pinkish yellow colour on the surfaces with a light yellowy grey core. It is fine grained with colourless inclusions as well as large pieces of red and black material incorporated in the fabric. Not much of the internal grit survives but it appears to be dark brown or dark grey and in small pieces. The sherds are very worn. Many of the pieces are large and …

A copper alloy probable stylus which is 69.8mm long. The shaft is circular in section and has a diameter of 4.8mm. At one end the shaft is flattened and flared into a rounded eraser which is 9.1mm wide. The metal has split and the eraser is broken. At the opposite end the shaft is reduced by half and becomes more angular, almost triangular in section for 12.2mm before the slightly rounded tapering terminal. This object is probably a Roman stylus though it is shorter than the examples in Bishop (1996) and the more similarly shaped parallels in Manning (1976, 54). It is also possible tha…

A copper-alloy toggle of post-Medieval date. It has a solid three- dimensional ellipsoid which is 19mm wide and 8.5mm thick. The toggle is 24.4mm long from the loops to the face of the head. It has a flaky grey patina. Although it has an unusua form, several similar ones have been recorded on the database, including WMID-905A14. At present, there is no reliable typological sequence for the development of this category of artefact.

An iron arrow head which has a rounded socket instead of a tang. It is 52.9mm long and 17.2mm wide. The blade is a long triangular shape and seems to be flat though the corrosion could be obscuring details. The arrowhead has barbs which appear to be straight not curved, but one is missing and the other is broken so the shape is not certain. There is some damaged to one side of the blade and to the socket, which is 9.4mm thick. The iron is corroded but seems to be stable. Arrowheads are notoriously difficult to date. Barbed arrows or spearheads are rare from Roman contexts and tend t…

The thickened end bends backwards slightly. The other end is an old break. On the reverse is a central projecting lug. This lug makes the object difficult to identify since without it the object could easily be a strap end, but with the lug the object is different to most known brooches or mounts. The axe is 104.6mm long, 58.4mm wide and 31.7mm thick. The axe was examined by Stuart Ogilvy who reports that the material is a medium to coarse grained plutonic igneous rock.
