Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy strap end which is medieval in date. The strap end is sub rectangular and tapers to a point at the closed end and is concave at the attachment end. It is composite, formed from a front plate, a back plate and a spacer, all joined by a rivet in the open end and soldered at the closed end. The strap end is 32.8mm long, 9.2mm wide and 3.3mm thick. The front plate is inscribed with five Romanesque capital letters, probably: “HINCK”, though the C could be a G. The uprights of the H curve outwards at the top and bottom. It does not have serifs but the other letters do. …

A copper alloy fastening in the form of a carbine hook and attached loop. A carbine is a loop with a gate in the side which is hinged, and is often sprung or screwed shut. This example has a drop shaped loop with the gate in the left hand side. The gate hinge is of iron and has corroded, making it impossible to tell if this example was sprung or just hinged. It did not screw shut. There is a rivet through the gate at the end opposite to the hinge. It is not clear what purpose the rivet had, but it projects into the drop shaped loop. There are two parallel incised lines across the hinge…

A copper alloy lock bolt which dates from the Roman period. The bolt is sub rectangular but is broken across the openings. The complete end is flat and rectangular with file marks evident on the upper face. Half way along the bolt becomes thicker at the sides and the centre contains three complete holes, on D shaped and two sub-triangular. The other two visible holes are at the broken end and are damaged. The break is worn and patinated. The reverse is flat. The bolt is 46.7mm long, 14.2mm wide and 5.8mm thick. A copper alloy purse frame which is post-medieval in date. The frame is a curved bar which is circular in section. It is decorated by two or three faint incised circumferential lines at each end, which, although there are no specific terminals, suggests that the bar is complete. Four circular loops projects from the frame. The frame is 95.6mm long, 10.5mm wide and 6.2mm thick. The metal is in good condition and has a fairly even dark patina. Part of a similar frame, though with slightly different loops, can be seen in Egan (2005) on page 62. It has been dated from AD 1500 to 1700.

A copper alloy decorative band which is probably medieval. The band is made from a strip of copper alloy sheet which was bent into an oval loop, though this has broken recently into two pieces. Both pieces are slightly concave, with the top of the band bent backwards. It is not known of what object the band was originally a part. The decoration on the band is on two rectangular panels. The background of both is hatched with incised lines. In each panel is a crudely depicted animal looking back over its shoulder. Both animals have square heads, pointed noses, straight mouths and triang…

A flint probable transverse arrowhead of late Neolithic date. The arrowhead is shaped like a barbed arrowhead with one barb missing, but the artefact appears to be complete and deliberately formed with working on all sides. The working is short and semi-acute. The flint is translucent and light brown in colour. It is unusual because there appears to be a bulb of percussion at both ends. The flint is 38.2mm long, 22.3mm wide and 3.6mm thick. Close parallels for the arrowhead can be seen in Flint Implements (British Museum Publications, 1968) on page 94. It is debatable whether this arro…

It flares from the terminals to 9.8mm wide in the middle. The outer surface of the loop is pitted, though the inner surface is in better condition. The patina has been recently destroyed. The remaining, bottom edge bends forwards and then up to form a U-shaped hook. The bottom of the U has two raised ribs running from front to back. The top front of the hook is circular and convex. A copper alloy thimble which is probably early post medieval in date. It is 13.4mm high and has an external diameter of 18.5mm. The thimble has an open top but it is likely that it is a broken thimble of two-part construction rather than a sewing ring (Geake 2001). The rim is extensively thickened. There are six horizontal rows of deep circular indentations on the side. In two areas on the side, the bottom four rows of indentations have become blurred, forming diagonal furrows instead of distinct holes. A copper alloy hollow terminal or mount of two part construction. It may be the end cap of a knife, but its function remains uncertain. The object is trefoil shaped with shoulders underneath and a flat bottom edge. The front piece is rounded and in relief with a hollow back. It was originally fixed to a flat back plate of the same shape though the two pieces are now separate. The separation probably happened fairly recently as the patina is missing round the edges.
