A copper alloy Roman disc brooch dating from the 2nd century AD. The circular brooch is decorated with a raised circle round the centre surrounded by a sunburst design of a circular zigzag line with a pellet in each triangle between the zigzag line and the inner circle. There are very slight traces of enamel which appear dark blue and bright red in colour. The edge of the brooch is slightly damaged giving a diameter of 22.1mm. On the reverse, the spring of the pin and the two lugs flanking it survive as does some of the catchplate. The spring mechanism is the thickest part of the broo…

A poorly preserved copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch. It is damaged and has recently broken into two pieces with the foot and the lower part of the bow separated from the rest of the brooch. There is a vertical loop behind the head of the brooch. No more of the pin mechanism survives. The head of the trumpet is oval. The button is now worn smooth and is ellipsoid in section. It continues round onto the back of the bow. Above and below the button the bow is swollen. The bow then tapers to the break which is at the narrowest part of the bow. It then widens again towards the foot which i…

Part of a poorly preserved Roman headstud brooch. Only the head and part of the bow survive and the surfaces have been worn almost totally smooth. There is a notch for the pin mechanism between the wings and the remains of what was probably a tube to hold the pin bar behind the head. The wings are 17.9mm wide. At the top of the bow are the remains of the headstud, now just a slightly thickened oval area on the bow. Between the stud and the notch in the wings runs a thin vertical projection or ridge. Beneath the stud the bow tapers until the break which is also very worn. The surviving…

Head fragment of a copper alloy trumpet brooch with part of the pin still attached. The brooch fragment is 21.3mm long and the head is 12.9mm wide. There is a slight ridge down the centre of the front of the bow and a broken circular suspension loop at the top. The tapering and broken pin is formed from a flat piece of copper alloy with a hole through the wider hinged end. A bar runs through the hole to form the hinge. The bar is held by two arched lugs behind the head of the brooch. From the pin mechanism to the front of the bow measures 18.4mm. The bow is broken and the majority of …

An almost complete copper alloy Roman headstud brooch. It is in excellent condition with almost all the enamel surviving. The pin is sprung with 5 coils on each side of the pin. The wire head loop is the only element that is missing. The ends of the copper alloy wire which formed the loop can be seen at each side of the spring but the loop is missing. The wings which hide the pin mechanism are 27.5mm wide, rectangular and are decorated with a band of short indented lines round the bow and a similar line across each wing halfway along. On the outer edge of each wing is a band of enamel…

Part of a copper alloy Roman brooch. Only the head and the top part of the bow survive. This is probably part of a Fantailed brooch. A stub of the hinged pin is present in the notch in the cylindrical hinge cover behind the head. The head is sub-rectangular in section and plan and is 23.2mm wide and 10.3mm thick. It has a raised band around the face nearest the pin which is less pronounced on the back of the head. There are also raised bands running along the bow side of the head and down the sides of the bow. These curl round under the wings to form an oval border on each wing, and t…

A copper alloy fragment of an early medieval object which is 29.8mm long and 11.5mm wide. The object is sub-rectangular in plan with damaged edges and one end is curved and thickened. The thickened end bends backwards slightly. The other end is an old break. On the reverse is a central projecting lug. This lug makes the object difficult to identify since without it the object could easily be a strap end, but with the lug the object is different to most known brooches or mounts. The lug makes the object 5.8mm thick and it projects by 3.7mm. The object is decorated on the front face wit…

The central motif is in relief and appears to be a quadruped with its head at the left, facing the front. The animal's face is triangular and has projecting rounded ears in the two top corners. There may be an upright tail at the right. The reverse of the brooch is not decorated, but there is a faint vertical rib on the left side which m…

A copper alloy fragment of the foot of a long brooch. The fragment consists of oval "nostrils" in relief with a spatulate extension below. The fragment is only 17.8mm long, 15.5mm wide and 3mm thick. The break appears to be old and patinated. The reverse of the spatulate extension is smooth and flat, but the area behind the nostrils and between them is slightly concave, more corroded and roughened. The smooth surfaces of the fragment have a deep green patina. Similar examples can be found on many of the brooches in "A Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Material from Suffolk" by West (1998), and it…
