A lead alloy weight weighing approximately 1 kilogram. The weight is shaped like a three dimensional teardrop, or pear, and has a small circular hole running from the top to the bottom. It is likely a hook of some sort was attached through the hole to allow the weight to be hung on scales. The weight is 74.8mm long and has a diameter of 54.7mm. The metal is pitted and scratched and has a uniform dark grey colour. The weight’s mass of approximately 1kg suggests that the weight is probably modern, and likely to date from 1799 at the earliest, which is when the decision was taken to…

A circular lead fabric weight. There is a circular recess in the centre on one side, within which are two circular holes that pierce the disc. Despite looking like a button, these weights were and are used to weigh down the hems of curtains, and perhaps also skirts. Examples can be seen on page 83 of Bailey's (2004) Buttons and Fasteners. They seem to come into use perhaps in the eighteenth century, and are still available to buy today. This example is in good condition with a white patina that is slightly damaged round the edges. It is 24.3mm in diameter and 4.4mm thick.

A lead weight which weighs 3.99oz and so was probably intended to be a 4oz weight. Its length is 42.9mm and it has a width of 39.4mm. It has a weight of 113.15g. It is an oval domed shape with a rough circle on the base, possibly from the casting. It is not decorated and it has a thick white patina. Undecorated objects are very difficult to date but the exactness of the weigh may suggest that it is post medieval in date.

The upper surface carries a crude, raised design depicting a windmill: this consists of a vertical rectangle, one end of which rises to a point, containing a circle, and flanked on both sides by three lines representing the sails. David Powell comments: "it looks like a [mill] building, end-on. The sails are rather randomly drawn, but there are enough of them, reasonably placed, to suggest that a mill was intended. Without any of those radial lines, a bottle with stopper might have been another possibility." It is 26.4mm in di…
