A complete melon bead made from faience. The surface is worn but traces of the turquoise glaze survive. The bead is sub-spherical, 23mm diameter and 21mm high. It is decorated with 21 raised vertical ribs. The central aperture has an internal diameter of 6.7mm. The bead is Roman, probably 1st to 2nd century AD. A close parallel is known from Castleford (West Yorkshire Archaeology Service, 1998, page 185, no.55). Melon beads form just under half of the total number of beads found in Castleford. Fragment of 17th-century silver head-dress pin (bodkin type). Only the scoop-shaped terminal and a fragment of shaft survive. The shaft is rectangular in cross-section, with a complete rectangular perforation which is framed with engraved decoration of pairs of oblique lines. There are two longer lines across the shaft at each end of the perforation. At the complete end of the pin is a semi-spherical concave scoop in the same plane as the shaft. Copper alloy medieval jetton which is 1mm thick and has a diameter of 19.5mm. Obverse: A rose with five petals in a hexagon with concave sides within a circle and a beaded border. Berry’s type 7: Rose within a reverse tressure (Berry 1974). Reverse: a cross recercelee (cross with divided and curled ends) with a pellet in each angle. Beaded border with a circular line dividing the border from the field. The jetton is probably one from the reign of Edward II (Berry 1974) and dates from circa AD1307 – 1327.

Copper alloy medieval padlock key for a barb spring padlock. The key has a lozenge shaped bow with a circular hole through it. There is a collar under the bow then the stem is oval in section. A post medieval copper alloy sword belt fitting. The fitting consists of a curvilinear plate with a hook at one end. It would have been fitted onto a scabbard strap. The centre area of the plate is sub-triangular with a trilobed area containing a rivet hole projecting from the narrow end, the central lobe being extended to form the hook. The hook curves towards the front of the plate, forming a depth of 10.5mm, and has a globular knop. A suspension loop from the corresponding belt plate survives, attached to the hook. Three pieces of a late medieval to early post-medieval copper alloy probable buckle with very tall sub-conical settings, now containing white paste only. The largest piece is a corner piece measuring 38.8mm long, 15.9 wide and 13.2 thick. Neither side is complete, but both bend inwards from the corner, making concave sides in plan. A medieval lead alloy seal matrix. The matrix is a pointed oval shape with slightly damaged edges and is 27.3mm long and 17.9mm wide. There is an elongated quatrefoil in the centre of the die with the legend round the edge. On the reverse is a central raised rib with a curved raised line on either side of it, like a fleur-de-lis. A copper alloy Roman disc brooch dating from the 2nd century AD. The circular brooch is decorated with a raised circle round the centre surrounded by a sunburst design of a circular zigzag line with a pellet in each triangle between the zigzag line and the inner circle. There are very slight traces of enamel which appear dark blue and bright red in colour. The edge of the brooch is slightly damaged giving a diameter of 22.1mm. A copper alloy circular weight, probably post-medieval in date. The disc is 27.2mm in diameter and is decorated with a border of two concentric indented lines on the top and is marked with an “A” over an “S”. The cross bar of the “A” is faint and the mark could also be interpreted as “S” over “V”. The mark is repeated on the reverse but without the border. The disc is 6.9mm thick and the metal is now a dark brown colour. It weighs 29.2g or fractionally over 1oz.

A poorly preserved copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch. It is damaged and has recently broken into two pieces with the foot and the lower part of the bow separated from the rest of the brooch. Part of a poorly preserved Roman headstud brooch. Only the head and part of the bow survive and the surfaces have been worn almost totally smooth. There is a notch for the pin mechanism between the wings and the remains of what was probably a tube to hold the pin bar behind the head. The wings are 17.9mm wide. At the top of the bow are the remains of the headstud, now just a slightly thickened oval area on the bow. Between the stud and the notch in the wings runs a thin vertical projection or ridge. A gilded copper alloy plaque in the shape of a six pointed star. The front is convex and the back is flat. The front is decorated with concave circles or settings, one large one in the centre surrounded by six medium sized ones, and with six smaller ones beyond, one at the end of each point. A silver disc which is probably a Roman denarius coin. The coin is sub-circular with a diameter of 15.9mm and a thickness of 1.6mm. It is totally illegible and has some recent fine scratches on both surfaces. It probably dates from the early Roman Republican period (2nd-1st centuries BC) or from the earlier Roman imperial period (c. 27BC-238).
