Copper alloy medieval jetton which is 1mm thick and has a diameter of 19.5mm. Obverse: A rose with five petals in a hexagon with concave sides within a circle and a beaded border. Berry’s type 7: Rose within a reverse tressure (Berry 1974). Reverse: a cross recercelee (cross with divided and curled ends) with a pellet in each angle. Beaded border with a circular line dividing the border from the field. The jetton is probably one from the reign of Edward II (Berry 1974) and dates from circa AD1307 – 1327.

A copper alloy jetton which probably dates from the fifteenth century. The jetton is damaged. Much of the legend is missing and the flan is cracked. The obverse shows the modern arms of france – three fleur-de-lis on a shield with a beaded edge. Only part of the legend is legible and it reads […] TONT […]. A copper alloy jetton or reckoning counter dating from the post medieval period. The jetton is bent at a right angle across the centre. It has a diameter of 24.1mm and is 0.7mm thick. It is a German jetton made by Hanns Kravwinckel II (1586 – 1635), Rose and Orb type. The obverse deign is illegible. For reference see Mitchiner (1988) Volume I, number 1516. The jetton was found in Yorkshire.

A copper alloy Nuremberg jetton, Rechenmeister type, with the alphabet on the reverse. The jetton has a diameter of 26.5mm and is 1mm thick. It depicts a Rechenmeister using jettons at a counting table on the obverse. The jetton is pierced. An exact parallel has not been found, but it is similar to Mitchiner (Volume 1) number 1430. It probably dates from 1580 to 1600.

A copper alloy jetton (reckoning counter) dating from the early post medieval period. The jetton has a diameter of 26.3mm and is 0.5mm thick. It weighs 1.4g. It is very worn, but just enough of the design is visible to be able to identify it as a Ship Penny Jetton of Hans Krauwinckel I (1562 – 1586). It depicts a sailing ship on the obverse, and four fleur-de-lis in a lozenge on the reverse. For reference see Mitchiner (1988) Jettons, Medalets and Tokens, Volume 1, numbers 1480 – 1485.

A copper alloy jetton from the late medieval or early post medieval period. The jetton has a diameter of 23.4mm and is 1.8mm thick. It weighs 3.1g. The edges are damaged, making the reverse legend illegible. The jetton was struck in Tournois under Louis XII or Francis I sometime between 1497 and 1521. For references see Mitchiner’s (1988) ‘Jetons, Medalets and Tokens’ Volume I, numbers 756 – 758. The jetton is in good condition and has a dark green patina.

A copper alloy jetton struck by Hans Zwingel in 1553 - 1586. The jetton has a diameter of 27.9mm and is 1.2mm thick. This design, with the rechenmeister on the obverse, and the alphabet on the reverse can be know as a school penny or Rechen Meister jetton. The extra Z at the end is the signature of the maker. For reference see number 1427 and 1428 in Mitchiner's "Jetons, Medalets and Tokens" Volume 1 (1988).

A copper alloy jetton dating from the fifteenth century. It has a diameter of 27.9mm and is 1.5mm thick. It bears the Modern shield of France (three fleur-de-lys in a shield with convex sides) on the obverse with a pellet to the side. The first half of the legend is illegible, but it ends “[…] A [annulet] GRACIA”. On the reverse is a triple stranded cross fleuretty with a quatrefoil at the centre enclosed within a quatrefoil border. A copper alloy jetton or reckoning counter dating from the post medieval period. It was struck in Nuremberg by Hanns Krauwinckel II between 1586 and 1635. It is a Rose / Orb type, one of the most common. The jetton is light green and red, and an area of original bright green patina survives on the obverse, but is missing elsewhere. For reference see Mitchiner (1988) Volume I of Jetons, Medalets and Tokens, page 439, numbers 1518 – 1527.

A copper alloy English Jetton probably from the reign of Edward II (1307 – 1327). There are three lions on the obverse (Berry type 5) and a chequerboard on the reverse (Berry type 9). This combination is not one that was known to Berry, but there is another example on the database which looks to be very similar; BERK-5A3557. The jetton has a diameter of 18.22mm and is 1.16mm thick. It weighs 1.09g. There is a small oval indentation in the centre of the obverse which may be a deliberate stamp mark. For reference see Berry (1974) Medieval English Jettons, pages 45 – 49.

A copper alloy jetton in poor condition. One side is completely illegible, however the other seems to show one circle from the 'three circles badge of Tournai' type. This makes it either Charles VIII (1422-1461) or Louis XII (1497-1515). For examples see Mitchiner, p.242-5, 203, 210-11.

A post medieval, copper alloy French jetton of Tournai c. 1500-1550. It is of the traditional 'Chatel Tours' design, which had become obsolete but was re-introduced during this period. The legends on both sides are fictitious. It is 26.2mm in diameter and 1.4mm thick. It weighs 4.18gm. The jetton is well struck but is cracked across almost the full width of the flan. A similar example can be seen in Mitchiner, Vol. 1 p.242, No. 742.

A copper-alloy English jetton of Edward II (1307 - 1327). According to George Berry's catalogue (medieval English Jettons) it is a Type 6 (lion's head facing forwards) and has reverse type 5 (a short cross Moline). There is a border of pellets and saltires on the obverse and pellets on the reverse (Bord D/G). This type has also been catalogued by Barnard as number 32 and Snelling as number 29. It is 20mm in diameter and 1mm thick. It weighs 1.87gm.
