A copper alloy fragment of a Roman coin; a piece cut from a larger nummus of Magnentius dating from AD 352 - 353 (Reece Period 18). SALVS DD NN AVG ET CAES reverse type depicting a large Chi-Rho. The cut down coin is 12.5mm long, 12.4mm wide, 2.3mm thick and weighs 2.14g. Compare LEIC-62BF18 which notes that "These coins appear to be cut down from larger coins in response to a decree of AD 354 which outlawed large denominations.  The excavations of a well at Piddington Villa (Northants) does appear to confirm that they date to the AD 35…
