A post medieval lead alloy incomplete button, only the front surviving. The button is domed with a central pimple and stepped concentric rings round the edge. It has a diameter of 16.6mm and is 6.5mm thick. Buttons of this type were made in two parts with a pewter front and a separate back piece and loop that were often made of iron, as was probably the case with this example. There is ferrous corrosion on the reverse and a corroded piece of wire inside the hollow back that is probably part of the loop. A similar button can be seen on page 50 of ‘Buttons and Fasteners’ by Bailey (2…

A lead alloy probable weight. The object is conical, and has a hole running vertically through the centre. There are several old dents on the side and base, and a recent scrape. Lead weights are imperfectly understood and cannot normally the attributed to a specific period. It is hoped that increased recording and further study of these objects will allow better understanding in the future. This one weighs 98.2g, which is not far off three ounces. The hole through this example casts some doubt on its function as a standing weight, yet the hole seems too narrow to allow use as a spindle…

Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy object which is possibly a small spoon or an apothecary’s measure. The object is 35.9mm long, 16.1mm wide and 7.1mm thick. The bowl of the spoon is a hollow semi-spherical shape and the handle is level with the top of the bowl. The handle is somewhere between being hexagonal and oval in section. It extends for 18mm before the break. The spoon is thick and chunky. This makes it seem more likely that it was used as a measure rather than for eating. It is also possible that this object is part of a mould for lead shot. This seems unlikely because lead shot was usually mou…

A lead alloy perforated weight, probably a medieval fishing weight. The weight is 58.2mm long, 20.3mm wide and 17.7mm thick. It weighs 68.3g. It is square with concave sides in section and tapers at both ends. One end extends into a simple oval suspension loop. The weight is deeply patinated and is a creamy white colour. Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as often as possible, a large body of data that can be studied will be built up.

A lead alloy uniface token which is probably late medieval or early post medieval. The token is a circular disc,18mm in diameter and 2.5mm thick.
