Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead alloy probable weight. The object is conical, and has a hole running vertically through the centre. There are several old dents on the side and base, and a recent scrape. Lead weights are imperfectly understood and cannot normally the attributed to a specific period. It is hoped that increased recording and further study of these objects will allow better understanding in the future. This one weighs 98.2g, which is not far off three ounces. The hole through this example casts some doubt on its function as a standing weight, yet the hole seems too narrow to allow use as a spindle…

A possible lead alloy weight of unknown date. The object is a rounded rectangular shape with a narrowed centre, making it H shaped in section. The two ends are rounded, but the central shaft has straighter edges. The function of this object is not certain. It weighs 229g which is approximately 8 ounces. It is 30.4mm in diameter and is 27.4mm thick. Lead weights are imperfectly understood and cannot normally the attributed to a specific period. It is hoped that increased recording and further study of these objects will allow better understanding in the future. No parallel for this obje…

A lead alloy perforated weight, probably a medieval fishing weight. The weight is 58.2mm long, 20.3mm wide and 17.7mm thick. It weighs 68.3g. It is square with concave sides in section and tapers at both ends. One end extends into a simple oval suspension loop. The weight is deeply patinated and is a creamy white colour. Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as often as possible, a large body of data that can be studied will be built up.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy mount of unknown date, possibly Early Medieval. It is a thin rectangular plate with both ends broken. There is a circular hole in one end, presumably for a rivet. The front is decorated with a central lozenge with a thin border line round it and ornate scrolls and foliage around it. These could alos be interpreted as devolved animals. There is a plain border along the long sides with a border divided into small squares outside that. The hole interrupts the design. The style of the decoration has been suggested to be related to Trewhiddle style. The metal has a smoo…

A copper alloy handle from an unidentified object of uncertain date. It is 38.7mm long, 12mm wide, and 8.1mm thick. It weighs 4.01gm. The handle is rectangular in section and baluster shaped in plan, with a wide top, bottom and centre with tapering areas between. At what may be the top is a semi-circular flange projecting from the end. This has a circular hole though it and may be part of a hinged fitting, or be a suspension loop. At the other end is a small circular stem or rivet suggesting attachment to something thin like metal sheet. It has not been possible to find a parallel, bu…

A semi-circular piece of fine grained soft red sandstone that has been ground flat on one side and on one face which are at right angles to each other. There are striations on both flat surfaces. It is 56.1mm long, 19.4mm wide, and 14.4mm thick. It weighs 22.11gm. The stone is very soft so may have been used as a polishing stone rather than a hone. It may also be natural, though the straight edges look to be man made. This sort of object is almost impossible to date.

A complete cast copper alloy bead of Unknown date. The bead is bi-conical in form and has a central longitudinal circular perforation. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A crude, lead alloy spindle whorl of uncertain date from the Roman to Medieval periods. The whorl is sub circular in plan and rectangular in section. The hole is off centre and slightly angled. One face is slightly hollowed. It would seem to fit into Coppergate type B1.
Spindle whorls are very difficult to date as few are found in dated contexts.

A lead alloy probable perforated weight. It is tear drop shaped in plan, and D shaped in section. It may have been formed by pouring lead into the bowl of a spoon. A small suspension hole has been made where the stem would have been, but the hole is now damaged. It has a length of 63.40mm, width 41.68mm, thickness 12.75mm, weight 181.18g or 6.4oz. Another crude weight apparently cast in a spoon is KENT-0EF490. A medieval or post medieval date is most likely.
