An incomplete copper alloy strap fitting; part of a sword belt fitting dating from around AD 1500-1700. The set would have consisted of a plate with three loops descending from it, and three scabbard hooks of which this is one. The hook plate is broadly heart shaped with a large trilobed terminal at one end, and the other end is missing. The front of the scabbard hook is decorated with a moulded foliage design. The hook for attaching to the plate is missing. On the rear, which is generally flat, there are signs of a rivet hole just above the hook, and ano…

It is a stirrup shaped frame; an oval loop with a collar and knop at the apex, in the same style as a  Cassels type 1.5C buckle. Attached to the bar is the corroded remains of the bar mount, which is bent over into the space in the centre of the frame. The object is 15.7mm long, 10.9mm wide, 7.4mm thick and weighs 1.70g. The surviving loop descends from the terminal. The other end is broken. The front is decorated with moulded foliage designs. There is a rivet hole in the terminal, and a further rivet hole in the centre of the plate. The plate is corroded.  Attached through the loop is a complete scabbard hook. A copper alloy strap fitting, probably a strap slide of Roman date, AD 43 - 410. The object is circular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. It is decorated with eight evenly spaced pointed oval petals moulded in relief. Each oval has two longitudinal curved grooves along it. They surround a central annulet. Corrosion within the annulet suggests that there may have been a separate central stud, now missing, fixed though a hole in the centre of the fitting. The reverse of the object is flat except for a a scar in the centre (from the missing stud) and two integral stubs of t…

A copper alloy Medieval pendant loop and bar mount dating from AD 1350 - 1400. The loop is annular, sub-circular and is of D shaped cross-section. The bar mount is rectangular and slender. One end is bevelled. The other narrows then bends backwards to form a U shaped suspension loop, the end of which is riveted to the back of the mount. The object is 17.2mm long, 9.6mm wide, 4.2mm thick and weighs 0.85g. See https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecordingguides/pendent-loops/ and page 221 in Egan and Pritchard (1991).

At one end is an open rolled backwards hook. This hook would have probably held a small loop but this is now missing. There are two rivet holes on the plate, both on the centre line. The object is 27.8mm long, 11.3mm wide, 6.6mm thick and weighs 2.41g. A cast copper alloy zoomorphic strap end from the Early Medieval period, AD 850 - 1100. Only the zoomorphic terminal at the closed end survives. It is probably part of a Thomas Class F strap end. The terminal is ppointed and moulded into an animal head with rounded ears, brown ridges, oval eyes and a narrow snout. Above the head is a narrower neck which just widens again before the break, which reveals the split characteristic of cast strap ends. Length: 27.06mm Width: 15.55mm Thickness: 4.96mm Weight: 6.95g This type of strap-end is Thomas's Class F, and…

An incomplete copper alloy Iron Age object, probably a strap slide or brooch, but possibly a range of other objects, dating from about 300 BC - 150 BC, or perhaps to AD 100. The object is two hollow lobes or hemispheres, cast in one next to each other forming a bar of two domes. One lobe is marginally bigger than the other. They are hollow on the reverse. There are the broken remains of two fixing points on the reverse. One is just a scar where the projecting element has broken off. The other is a short projecting bar, rectangular in cross-section, that slopes away from the r…

Part of a copper alloy Medieval strap slide dating from AD 1150 - 1400. Only the front edge survives. It is sub-rectangular, tapering at both ends, and has a central rounded boss. It is D shaped in cross-section. At one end there is a right angle bend where part of the side survives, but the other side and the back are missing, making it impossible to know what type of rivet and/or projections it had. The object is 17.2mm long, 7.0mm wide, 5.5mm thick and weighs 1.80g. See https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecordingguides/strap-slides/#Medievalstrap-slides.

A Post Medieval copper alloy strap slide or strap fitting, dating from AD 1550 - 1700. The mount has moulded and gilded decoration of uncertain form, possibly foliate. It is 24.3mm long, 5.6mm wide and 9.5mm thick. 3.9g. A copper alloy probable belt plate or belt stiffener of late Roman date, AD 300 - 500, possibly later reused as a rectangular mount of uncertain date. The mount is a flat, long rectangular sheet of copper alloy. There is a copper alloy rivet in the centre of each end. One face of the plate is decorated. There is a recessed channel along one long edge and one short edge, containing a row of reserved metal lozenges. These are very small, giving a beaded or billeted effect. On the outside of the beaded border is a shallow wide grooved border on the edge of the plate. The long edge i…

A cast copper alloy eye section from a post-Medieval toggle clasp, probably from a sword belt and dating from AD 1500 - 1700. The clasp is incomplete. It has rectangular plate containing a rectangular eye, with an arched and decorated bar across one end. The decoration is diagonal grooves. A flatter raised bar marks the other end of the eye, and a perforated plate extending beyond this is mostly missing. A circular loop projects from one side near the arched end. A copper alloy Post Medieval strap fitting or mount dating from the AD 1600 - 1700. It is a small strap mount in the form of a fleur-de-lis with openwork petals and a base of three spikes. Two horizontal grooves form a border across the base of the fleur. The tip of the central lobe of the fleur is missing. On the reverse are the remains of two attachment spikes. They are integral, both circular-sectioned and snapped off. They probably would have bent over to grip the leather. The mount is 17.95mm long, 15.98mm wide and 5.16mm thick. 1.96g. A copper alloy pendent loop of Medieval date, about AD 1300 - 1400. It is an openwork frame which is roughly quatrefoil, but which is straight at each end and with convex sides, leaving a roughly heart shaped opening in the centre because there is corrosion filling the upper and lower lobes. This loop would have been suspended from a bar mount on a belt. It is 14.9mm long, 11.9mm wide and 4mm thick. It weighs 1.91g. Compare Egan and Pritchard (1993) page 221, number 1189 and NARC-F0C922.

An incomplete copper alloy probable strap slide of late Iron Age to Roman date, about 100 BC - AD 200. The object appears to be the front part of a rectangular loop. The sides are flat thin plates, with a rounded end at the front, and turning inwards at the back of the loop, at least, on one side. The front is decorated with a bi-concave moulding, D shaped in section, with the ends of the sides projecting forward to form a slight ridge at each end, and a very pronounced ridge or semi-circular disc or flange projecting in the centre. A possible incomplete Post Medieval strap fitting or strap mount dating from AD 1500 - 1700. It is a strip of copper alloy that tapers into a hook at one end (now incomplete) and expands to form a plate at the other end. The plate is incomplete, but contains two iron rivets in the centre, one above the other. The plate is roughly heart shaped with a bilobed top, concave between the two corner lobes. When complete, the loop or hook would probably have been closed, riveted on to the back of the plate. SUSS-80D571 is similar and cites Read (1988: Fig 21, no.13) who illustrates a similar …
