A copper alloy strap slide (strap fitting) which is medieval in date, about AD 1200 - 1400. It is a stirrup shaped loop with a collared knop at the rounded end. There is an integral external rivet projecting from the bar. The frame is trapezoidal in cross-section and file marks are visible. The frame is 26.3mm long, 16.3mm wide and 3.4mm thick. 2.32g. It is believed that these loops were used to hold down the loose end of a belt. This one is in good condition and has a dark grey patina. Similar examples, though not one with a knop, can be seen in "Dress Accessories" by Egan and Pri…

A Post Medieval strap fitting; the hook piece from a sword belt fitting dating from AD 1500 - 1700. The plate is sub-triangular in basic outline, with a wide three lobed terminal at one end, and a narrower lobe at each shoulder at the other end. Projecting from between the narrower lobes is the broken stub of the missing forward curving hook. The plate is pierced by two iron rivets, of which only traces now survive. One is positioned in the middle of each plate terminal. The front of the plate is decorated with a foliate design covering the plate. The sword belt fitting has a gr…

A copper-alloy snake or dragon form strap fitting or fastener of post-medieval to modern date. The artefact is 'S-shaped'. The terminals take the form of the neck and head of dragon like animal with clear ears, eyes, an upturned snout and open jaw. The neck is thin, of pointed-oval section and forms a broad curve. At the centre of the object, dividing the two animals, is a convex moulding with a series of radiating ridges, similar to an acanthus button on a Roman trumpet brooch. The central disc has four projection points moulded in the round. An area of scales or pine cone like …

A copper alloy belt mount, probably dating from the Medieval period. It is rectangular in shape with material surviving in place between the riveted copper pieces. The mount is formed of two sheets of copper alloy sheet, sandwiching the cloth, with a rivet in each corner. The 4 rivets are still in place. There is a larger circular hole in the centre, through both plates. The mount has a length of 35.10mm, width 15.76mm, thickness 4.27mm, weight 7.24g. For a similar example see number 1060 on page 197 of Egan and Pritchard's Dress Accessories. The cloth seems to be made of two material…
