County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete, worn fragment of a cast Late Bronze Age copper alloy socketed axe head, dating from about 1300-700 BC. The fragment consists of the axe's blade above which is a worn and abraded break that reveals a shallow portion of the socket. The axe fragment is sub-trapezoidal in plan with the sides being slightly concave, particularly on one side as the tip of the blade is not abraded like the other. The blade is an asymmetrical crescent which is possibly due to wear and abrasion.
The broken edge of the axe runs transversely across its body giving a flat edge. In cro…

An annular ring, probably a bead, probably of prehistoric date, but uncertain, potentially Bronze Age to Roman, BC 1100 - 410. The object is annular in plan, with a circular hole which is not central, of 7.2mm diameter. It is a thick oval in cross-section, and the ring is thicker at one side than at the other. The hole is nearer to the thinner part. There is a irregular concavity (3mm diameter) on the outer face of the thinnest part of the ring, which is probably a casting flaw. The bead is also decorated with a narrow circumferential ridge around the outer face. The ridge intersects w…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint chunk, possibly minimally worked into a denticulate, of possible Bronze Age or Iron Age date, 2200 BC - 200 BC. It is formed on a secondary flake of patinated mottled light grey flint, and has much cortex surviving, covering all but 2 faces. The chunk is a knobbly nodule, with two struck faces at right angles to each other. A notch in the centre of the right side of the larger flat face could be intentional, with short, scalar, abrupt retouch, but could also be natural damage. There are also some removals from the distal end of the large flat face, on the right, but these …

There are a few previous removal scars and possible platform preparation on the dorsal face, but the flake otherwise appears to be as struck. The curved distal end may have been utilised as a knife or cutting tool. There is possible exceedingly fine retouch, but this is so slight that it is pro…
