An incomplete copper alloy ingot of uncertain dating.
The ingot is in the form of a bar with angular ends and is triangular in section. The surfaces are rippled. It is undecorated with a gold/bronze coloured patina.
When initially reported it was thought this item may be gold, however upon metallurgical analysis using X-Ray Fluorescence the results demonstrated that the object is 79.22 % copper alloy (cu) composition. It also contains 19.43 % zinc and 0.55% iron. The ingot has no diagnostic features and is therefore difficult to date to a spe…

An incomplete gold ingot of probable 7th Century AD dating.
The ingot is semi-circular, with flat front and back sides. The top of the ingot is rounded, with bevelled edges, and the lower edge is incomplete with a jagged edge. Faint hammer marks can be seen on the flat surfaces.
Dimensions:
Length: 10.4 mm
Width: 11.1 mm
Thickness: 3.6 mm
Weight: 3.5 g (54 grains)
Discussion:
The shape and style, with flattened front and back is suggestive of ingots of the 7th Century. Although it has not been tested using XRF analysis, from appearance and style, it is probably substantially prec…

Description:
One and a half silver 'cigar' shaped ingots, of Early Medieval dating (c. 800 AD to c. 1000 AD).
The complete ingot is sub rectangular in plan (cigar), with a triangular section. The upper surface is smooth, whereas the lower sides are pitted, as a result from casting in an open mould of sand or stone. The incomplete ingot is of a similar sub rectangular shape, but it exhibits an old predepositional break across the width of the ingot. Like the complete ingot, the upper surface is smooth, and the lower surfaces are pitted.
Dimensions:
The complete ingot measures …
