An incomplete fragment of probable silver casting waste, of uncertain dating, but probably Roman to Medieval (AD 43 to AD 1500). The fragment is irregular in plan and section. It measures 25.15 mm in length, 13.47 mm wide and 9.28 mm thick. It weighs 8.5 g. The finder initially identified this item as 'hack silver', however due to the appearance of solidified molten runs, it is more likely to be casting waste than 'hack silver'. The metal is believed to be silver, but XRF testing refused to confirm as it could not focus on the artefact. Barry Ager (British Museum) has stated …

A fragment of copper alloy, probable casting waste, possibly of Bronze Age dating (2150 BC to 800 BC). However, due to the lack of context and continuation of casting styles, this fragment could be dated from the Bronze Age through to the Roman Period (c.2150 BC - 410 AD). The fragment is sub triangular in plan, and roughly D shaped in cross section. It has an irregular, rough surface. It is most likely part of a copper ingot, prior to being smelted and cast. An irregular fragment of copper alloy casting waste, of uncertain dating, but possibly Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval (1400 - 1800 AD). The casting waste fragment consists of a sub rectangular sheet, with uneven, almost bubbly surfaces. It is sub rectangular in cross section. Two edges are smooth and unabraded, indicative of a fairly recent break. It is a mid grey colour, with a couple of areas which display a distinctive shiny sheer to it. This shiny sheer is suggestive that the copper alloy has a high tin content. The weight of the fragment is suggestive that lead …
