An incomplete copper alloy Roman decorated trumpet brooch, dating to circa AD 100-250.
The brooch is almost complete apart from the missing pin and spring mechanism. The brooch is an inverted 'L' shape in profile and the bow tapers from an oval head to a circular foot knop.
At the reverse of the head are the remains of a perforated lug that would have held the spring in place. The reverse of the head is broadly oval.

A fragment of a copper alloy brooch of Roman date, possibly a Colchester Derivative dating to circa AD 43-200.
The fragment consists of the upper part of the bow and the head. The object is broadly an inverted triangle in form. It is broad at the top and narrows to broken lower terminal.
At the rear of the head of the brooch is a heavily corroded coiled spring and the remains of the pin. Visible iron staining suggests the coil was formed from iron.
The brooch fragment measures 17.0 mm in length, 11.3 mm wide, and 5.6 mm thick at the head. It weighs 2.4 g.

Around 25% of the brooch is present, consisting of the bow and wings. The spring, pin, foot and catch plate are missing, presumed lost in antiquity.
The bow is angular and hump back, resembling a comma. It is broken around 1/3 of its length. The wings are semi cylindrical. A cylindrical recess is present behind the wings, this would have originally retained the spring. The reverse is undecorated.

It measures 22 mm in length and is 25 mm wide. It weighs 7 g.
The brooch is a mid to dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the ploughsoil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
