A complete iron axe or axehead, of probable Medieval dating (AD 1000 to AD 1500). The axe is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with an irregular shaped expanded blade that has a pronounced downward projection. The socket is sub circular in shape measuring 37.8 mm length x 27.3mm width. The butt of the axe is rectangular. As the blade expands in width it tapers in section; forming a wide even cutting edge. The axehead measures 160 mm in length, 34.3 mm wide at the butt, 9.3 mm wide at the blade and 122.0 mm thick. The axehead is a mid orange brown colour and has not been treate…
