Three irregular fragments of iron bloomery waste (slag) or fuel ash, of Iron Age to Late Medieval dating (800 BC to AD 1600). All three fragments are light for their size, which would suggest that minimal iron metal is present within the matrix. All have a honeycomb structure, formed of solidified air bubbles. The measurements are as follows: 1: Length: 24.53 mm. Width: 23.04 mm. Thickness: 15.25 mm. Weight: 3.8 g. 2: Length: 50.57 mm. Width; 31.64 mm. Thickness: 21.75 mm. Weight: 10.1 g. 3: Length: 31.00 mm. Width: 25.66 mm. Thickness: 19.56 mm. Weight: 11.7 g. All together t…

A fragment of Iron bloomery slag. The fragment measures 41.42mm long by 29.63m wide and 14.31mm thick. It weighs 10.4 grams. The fragment of slag feels light for its size, and bears a resemblement to vitrified clay. Air bubbles are present. The process of smelting iron ore to produce iron has not changed much from the Iron Age to the Medieval period, so this piece of bloomery slag could date from any time between the Iron Age (800 BC) to the Medieval Period (1500 AD).
