An incomplete copper alloy crossbow (heavy) brooch, of Late Roman dating (AD 320 to AD 400). Around 25% of the brooch is present, consisting of the head, a wing, and part of the bow. The head and the remaining wing have an onion shaped terminal (collared biconvex knop with large central pellet). The reverse of the central knop is deeply gashed, with a fragment of the hinged iron pin retained in the slot below. The front edge of the crossbar curves towards the sub-triangular sectioned bow, which tapers towards a break less than half way down the upper bow. It measures 36.8 mm in …

The pin, wings, catchplate and foot are missing. The front of the bow is decorated with a raised triangular section, The back of the brooch is plain and undecorated. Traces of silvering are present on the bow. Part of the original hinge fitting for the pin is still present on the rear of the head.
