A cast copper alloy finger ring with moulded decoration, most likely of medieval date (1200 to 1500 AD).
The finger ring consists of a cast copper alloy hoop with moulded decoration. It has a D shaped cross section with a prominent ridge on the external surface. This central ridge is 2.7mm wide and is flanked by two parallel recessed edges, each 1.1mm wide. The edges demonstrate a repeating series of small vertical incised lines all around the circumference of the hoop. The central ridge demonstrates six areas of decoration (1 panel repeated three times). The panel consists of about 15 vertical incised lines over a 11mm section. Prior to this section of incised lines is a stamped star design, with 6 radiating spokes, the lower point however has not impressed very well.
The internal surface of the ring exhibits a large number of file marks. No inscription appears to be present.
The ring measures: 24.77mm external diameter, 21.27mm internal diameter, 4.52mm width and 1.83mm thick. It weighs 2.9 grams.
Several comparative examples have been recorded. WMID-6296C3 is of a similar style, although the decoration is slightly different, was recovered from a site in Staffordshire as well. Excavations in London have turned up similar examples, with a similar style of decoration but without the prominent ridge. (Pritchard, 2002, p332, examples 1627 and 1629). The two examples from London came from contexts dated to the 15th Century.

A complete wrought copper alloy ring, probably the finger ring of a child, of unknown dating.
The ring is circular in plan, and circular in cross section. It consists of a drawn copper alloy wire wrapped and fixed together to form a solid unbroken ring. A small swelling is present where the two ends of the wire overlap and have been welded together. Small transverse scratch marks are present, where the ring has been filed and polished, but other than these, no signs of decoration are apparent.
The ring is a dark green colour, with an even patina. It measures 17.32mm external diameter, 13.87mm internal diameter, 1.96mm deep and 1.88mm thick. It weighs 0.9 grams.
The size and thickness of the ring would suggest that it was originally a finger ring, as opposed to harness or strap fitting. The simple and plain style means that it is relatively undiagnostic in dating and could date from the Roman period to the Post Medieval period.
A slightly smaller, but equally simple and plain copper alloy ring was published as #1744 on p. 47 by Crummy (1983), and that was dated to Late Period 6 (300 - 400+ AD) or Anglo-Saxon. Another similar sized but still plain, and made from wire ring was published by Pritchard (1991), as #1625 on p.332. That ring was dated to Period 12 (c.1400-c.1450 AD).

A gold mourning finger ring.
It has traces of black enamelling on the exterior, in a probable floral pattern. An inscription is present on the internal surface, reading "Death is the waye to life".
Next to the inscription on the internal surface is a maker's stamp with the initials TS in square cartouche.
Description: Post-Medieval gold mourning ring. D-shaped section with inscription on interior of band , which reads: Death is the waye to life. Maker's mark TS within rectangular cartouche. The fine floral scroll on the exterior, retaining much of the black enamel, is consistent with such a 17th Century date.
Discussion: Although the inscription on this ring is not dated the maker' s mark is close to the TS mark on rings in the British Museum collection, see AF. 1530 with inscription dated 1658 & AF. 1534 with inscription dated 1669
Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

A complete cast copper alloy finger ring, probably of Early Post Medieval dating (1500-1700).
The hoop is D shaped in cross section, being rounded to the external (outside edge). The shoulders expand slightly into the rectangular flat bezel. The bezel measures 8.55mm in length, 5.60mm wide. Both the bezel and the hoop appear to be undecorated.
The finger ring is a dark red / brown colour, with patches of a dark green surface patina present. This patina is likely to be the original surface, the majority of which has been removed due to abrasion occuring as a result of movement within the plough soil. The loss of the original surface does mean that if the ring was originally decorated, no trace of the decoration is now present.
The finger ring has an external diameter of 18.71mm, and an internal one of 15.35mm. It is 5.39mm wide. It weighs 2.9grams.
Plain finger rings of this style can be hard to date accurately as they can be relatively long lived, but it is thought that they tend to be consistent with Early Post Medieval dating (1500-1700 AD). A similar example has been recorded on the PAS database from Roundway, Wiltshire as WILT-D9E628.

A complete but misshapen silver finger ring, with rectangular bezel engraved with initials 'H J S'. The hoop is plain, and the shoulders expand to the width of the bezel. Two rectangular boxes have been engraved on each shoulder.
The finger ring has an external diameter of 20.14mm, internal of 18.47mm. The hoop is 2.81mm wide, and 0.81mm thick. The bezel is 6.27mm wide and 8.6mm long. It weighs 1.3 grams.
Comment from Judy Rudoe (Curator, British Museum): The lettering style is Post Medieval, 18th Century in style. The form of the ring is fairly undiagnostic on dating, as it is long lived style. Therefore as it dates to post 1711, it is less than 300 years old and therefore it is not classified under the 1996 Treasure Act.

A complete but misshapen gold finger ring, with domed oval red glass / paste inset intaglio. The intaglio was possibly engraved but due to damage caused by movement in the plough soil, any engraving is hard to determine.
The finger ring has been decorated by a series of double circles, with annulets in the centre, joined together by a raised bar.
The finger ring has an external diameter of 22.95mm, and an internal diameter of 17.53mm. The back of the hoop is 2.64mm wide and 0.83mm thick. The bezel is 13.93mm wide and 18.57mm long. The finger ring weighs 12.0 grams.
A casting or mould line is present on the internal surface, behind the bezel.
Comment from Judy Rudoe (Curator, British Museum): This style of finger ring is post 1711 in date, and therefore being less than 300 years old, it is not classified under the Treasure Act.

A complete cast copper alloy finger ring, of probable Early Post Medieval dating (16th to 17th Centuries AD).
The finger ring is of the signet ring style, with a shield shaped bezel. The shoulders are plain and expand slightly out from the width of the hoop. The hoop has a flanged cross section (a prominent ridge running around the centre of the hoop).
The device on the shield shaped bezel is hard to determine, it may be more pseudoheraldic in nature than actually heraldic, as it does not appear to conform to standard heraldic traits. The device consists of a central open cross or possibly a stylized sword / dagger. Placed in the voids between each arm of the cross, are a couple of raised semi-circles. A raised border is present around the edge of the shield device.
The finger ring is mostly a dark green colour, with an even surface patina. Patches of a white surface coating, with a scale like texture are present both the internal surface and on sections of the hoop. Exact cause of this coating is uncertain but is likely to be post depositional in nature.
The finger ring has an external diameter of 24.16mm, an internal diameter of 16.90mm. The hoop is 4.54mm wide and 3.68mm thick. The bezel measures 10.55mm long and 10.28mm wide. It weighs 5.4 grams.
The original signet rings were developed back during 13th Century, as a convienent way of carrying around your heraldic seal matrix (form of identity / signature), and continued in use until at least 17th Century AD. However the style did not completely go out of fashion, and pseudoheraldic devices on finger rings can be found from the 18th Century up until the modern period (20th - 21st Centuries AD).
This example, being made from copper alloy and cast, is probably 16th to 17th Centuries in date, but could be of later dating as it has been mentioned that the signet ring style has a very longevity to it.

A complete wrought copper alloy finger ring, probably of Late Post Medieval to Early Modern dating (19th to 20th Centuries AD).
The hoop is D shaped in cross section, being rounded to the external (outside edge). No bezel is present. The internal surface is flat. Traces of a pattern are present, including the word ONE. This would suggest that the finger ring was made from an old one pence piece. No date can be read.
The finger ring is a dark green colour, with an even patina covering the majority of the surface. Along the edge, the patina has flaked away in a couple of areas, to leave a bright green colour. These areas should be monitored to ensure that no active copper corrosion occurs. To minimise this risk, the finger ring should be stored in a sealed dry environment (e.g. tupperware box with silica gel), with acid free tissue paper.
The finger ring has an external diameter of 20.32mm, and an internal one of 17.48mm. It is 6.3mm wide and 1.39mm thick . It weighs 2.9 grams.
Plain finger rings of this style can be hard to date accurately as they can be relatively long lived, however as this has been made from an old penny, it is probably of Late Post Medieval to Early Modern dating (19th to 20th Centuries AD). Finger rings made from old coins can be a common find from old prisoner of war camps.

An incomplete cast copper alloy signet finger ring, of Early Post Medieval dating (15th to 16th Centuries AD).
The finger ring consists of an oval bezel, with part of the hoop. The hoop has a circular section and is incomplete. It extends 20.27mm below the bezel at the top part of the design and 17.53mm at the base of the design. The internal diameter of the ring is 20.21mm. The bezel is oval, with smooth tapered shoulders. It measures 20.88mm long by 15.75mm wide. The bezel is 3.91mm thick. The bezel consists of a recessed heraldic seal matrix type device. Two initials are present at the top (GB), above a shield bearing three cinque foils separated by a chervon.
The finger ring is a mid to dark green colour, with a smooth patina covering the majority of the surface. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil has resulted in the loss of the surface patina and some of the surface detail from the top and sides of the finger ring.
The ring has an external diameter of 25.07mm. It is 20.11mm long, 25.12mm wide and 15.72mm thick. The hoop is 2.97mm thick. It weighs 9.2 grams.
Finger rings with a seal matrix device, are often referred to as signet rings. This style was popular during the Early Post Medieval period (15th to 16th Centuries AD). It has not been possible at this time to identify the heraldic device to a specific family.

A cast copper alloy finger ring with incised decoration, most likely of medieval date (1200 to 1500 AD).
The finger ring consists of a cast copper alloy hoop with incised decoration. It has a D shaped cross section. The hoop exhibits a repeating series of small vertical incised lines all around the circumference of the hoop.
The internal surface of the ring exhibits a large number of file marks. No inscription appears to be present.
The ring is mid to dark green colour with an even surface patina.
The ring measures: 20.58mm external diameter, 18.56mm internal diameter, 2.54mm width and 1.03mm thick. It weighs 0.9 grams.
Several comparative examples have been recorded. WMID-6296C3 is of a similar style, although the decoration is slightly different, was recovered from a site in Staffordshire as well. Excavations in London have turned up similar examples, with a similar style of decoration. (Pritchard, 2002, p332, examples 1627 and 1629). The two examples from London came from contexts dated to the 15th Century.

A complete cast copper alloy finger ring, probably of Early Post Medieval dating (1500-1700).
The hoop is D shaped in cross section, being rounded to the external (outside edge). No bezel is present.
The finger ring is a mid to dark green colour, with patches of a dark green surface patina present. This patina is likely to be the original surface, the majority of which has been removed due to abrasion occuring as a result of movement within the plough soil. The loss of the original surface does mean that if the ring was originally decorated, no trace of the decoration is now present.
The finger ring has an external diameter of 18.66mm, and an internal one of 15.83mm. It is 4.13mm wide. The ring is 1.43mm thick. It weighs 1.7grams.

A complete, but bent gold posy finger ring of Late Post Medieval dating to the17th Century
No trace of enamel is surviving on the exterior, which has been decorated on the exterior with double hearts flanked by love birds with foliage and flowers, including a pansy for 'thoughts'. The object would have been enamelled, tiny traces remain.
Inscription on the inner surface: Loue euer or neuer
There is a possible maker's mark in the form of a square shield containing what may be the letter m. See British Museum rings AF.1536, 1280 & 1246 for comparison of the maker's mark: AF.1536 is a mourning ring dated to 1675.
The hoop of the ring is 2.79mm wide and 1.00mm thick. It has a diameter of 23.68mm. It weighs 1.8 grams.

An incomplete cast copper alloy signet finger ring, of Post Medieval dating (17th to 18th Centuries AD).
Approximately 50% of the finger ring is present, consisting of the bezel and part of the hoop. The bezel, bearing the signet device, is oval in shape. The signet device is unclear, probably decorative as opposed to an actual heraldic symbol. The bezel tapers into the hoop on both sides, with geometric designs present on the shoulders. The hoop is incomplete.
It measures 18.22mm long, 20.19mm wide and 2.65mm thick. It weighs 4.1 grams.
The finger ring is a mid to dark brown colour, with an even surface patina.
A direct parallel to this finger ring has not been found at the time of recording. The style of the decorative design on the bezel is suggestive of a late Post Medieval date (17th to 18th Centuries AD).

A complete cast copper alloy decorated finger ring, of probable Medieval dating (AD 1300 to AD 1500).
The finger ring consists of a D section hoop, with moulded cast decoration. The decoration appears to consist of a series of diagonal ridges. The internal surface is plain and undecorated.
The finger ring has an external diameter of 20.89 mm, an internal diameter of 16.50 mm. The band is 3.18 mm wide and 1.64 mm thick. It weighs 1.5 grams.
The finger ring is a mid dark brown to green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
Similar finger rings, albeit with a slightly different form of decoration, have been recorded on the PAS database, including YORYM-563AD4 and NCL-1f20C5. Both have been dated to the Medieval period (c. AD 1300 to AD 1500).

A complete gold finger ring, of uncertain dating, but probably Post Medieval to Modern in dating (AD 1750 to AD 1900).
The finger ring has a flat rectangular sectioned hoop. The bezel is unusual, consisting of a concave recess, with an circular sectioned bar mounted above it. Domed terminals are present on either end of the bar. It is uncertain whether anything was mounted on or beneath the bar.
The finger ring has an external diameter of 20.89 mm, an internal diameter of 17.69 mm. The hoop has a maximum width of 3.18 mm and a maximum thickness of 2.03 mm. It weighs 3.8 grams.
See SOM-2E9408 for a broadly similar style of bar bezel. However as it can not be proved that it is older than 300 years, it should be considered Not Treasure.
