A complete silver finger ring of Late Medieval dating (14th to 15th Century AD).
The finger ring is circular, with a D shape cross section. No makers marks are present or an inscription on the inside. The bezel consists of four petalled flower, with raised pellet centre. The bezel is one piece with the hoop, it has not been applied. Each petal is sub triangular with a central groove, suggesting the petals were folded. The outer rim of each petal is expanded, and they sit slightly raised above the body of the finger ring. To either side of the flower, on the hoop, are eight triangular notches, with the apex pointing away from the flower. A thin crack is present to the left of the flower.
The finger ring has an internal diameter of 19.0 mm and an external one of 21.6 mm. The hoop is 3.6 mm wide and 1.3 mm thick. The bezel is 7.2 mm wide and 5.5 mm long. It weighs 2.4 g.
Similar Finger rings with this style bezel have been recorded on the PAS database. These include: GLO-69827D; LANCUM-254BF6. These examples are considered to be Late Medieval in dating (14th to 15th Centuries AD). Therefore it is reasonable to assume that this example is of a similar date. As it is substantially precious in nature, and is older than 300 years, it should be considered to be Treasure under the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996.

Description: A complete but misshapen gold and enamel finger ring, of Post Medieval dating (16th to 17th Centuries AD).
The finger ring was originally circular in shape, but is now sub square, due to post depositional soil pressure deforming the band. It has a D shaped cross section. It has been decorated with a geometric grid pattern on the exterior containing significant remains of white enamel. Each square in the grid is approximately 1.0 mm wide. An inscription runs around the interior of the ring, reading: A FRENDS GYFT. No maker's mark is present.
Dimensions:
Length: 19.4 mm
Width: 16.5 mm
Hoop width: 3.8 mm
Hoop thickness: 1.1 mm
Weight: 1.4 g
Discussion: A couple of finger rings with similar exterior designs have been recorded on the PAS database as KENT-B71606 (2012T367) and SOM-2655A7 (2011T729). Both are considered to be of Post Medieval dating (16th to 17th Centuries AD).
The interior inscription, "A FRENDS GYFT" has been noted on several similar finger rings recorded on the PAS database, including: LEIC-6E8502; WMID-AF96D7; PAS-3B5388; LANCUM-961357 and IOW-5EFAB8. All are considered to be older than 300 years old.
A finger-ring in the British Museum's collection (AF.1337) has similar external decoration and an internal upper-case inscription '* LOVE * IS * A * IOY *'. This finger-ring is dated to the 16th century.
As the finger ring has a precious metal content in excess of 10%, and is older than 300 years, it should be considered to be potential Treasure under the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996.

A complete copper alloy signet finger ring, of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (c. AD 1450 to c. AD 1650).
The bezel is oval in shape. The device consists of a recessed Tau Cross (a T shaped cross with three arms, missing its upper arm), positioned on a slight diagonal. The shoulders are curved and taper straight into the hoop. The hoop is rectangular in cross section. The reverse of the finger ring is plain and undecorated.
The finger ring has an external diameter of 22.6 mm and an internal diameter of 19.2 mm. The bezel is 14.9 mm long and 12.0 mm wide. The hoop is 3.3 mm wide and 1.2 mm thick. It weighs 5.7 g.
The finger ring is a dark green colour with an even surface patina.
The Tau cross was one of the symbols of St Anthony who was thought to protect against the disease known as divine fire, or St Anthony's fire, the medieval name for ergot poisoning. Ergot is a fungus which develops on grain, notably rye, causing nerve paralysis, cramps and muscular contractions often known as St Vitus's dance. The ring could have been considered to offer protection against this disease.

A complete cast copper alloy decorated finger ring, of probable Medieval dating (AD 1300 to AD 1500).
The finger ring consists of a rectangular sectioned hoop, with moulded cast decoration. The decoration is unclear but consists of a repeating design of floral decoration. The finger ring appears to have been resized, with a square patch of metal placed over the join in the hoop of the finger ring. The internal surface is plain and undecorated.
The finger ring has an length of 24.80 mm and is 10.94 mm wide. The hoop is 6.16 mm wide and 1.41 mm thick. It weighs 3.2 g.
The finger ring is a mid dark brown to green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail. Soil pressure has resulted in a minor degree of deformation of the finger ring, making it more oval in plan as opposed to circular, this means that the original diameter of the finger ring can not be accurately determined.
Similar finger rings, albeit with a slightly different form of decoration, have been recorded on the PAS database, including YORYM-563AD4 and NCL-1f20C5. Both have been dated to the Medieval period (c. AD 1300 to AD 1500).

A cast copper alloy finger ring with moulded decoration, most likely of medieval date (1200 to 1500 AD).
The finger ring consists of a cast copper alloy hoop with moulded decoration. It has a D shaped cross section with a prominent ridge on the external surface. This central ridge is 2.7mm wide and is flanked by two parallel recessed edges, each 1.1mm wide. The edges demonstrate a repeating series of small vertical incised lines all around the circumference of the hoop. The central ridge demonstrates six areas of decoration (1 panel repeated three times). The panel consists of about 15 vertical incised lines over a 11mm section. Prior to this section of incised lines is a stamped star design, with 6 radiating spokes, the lower point however has not impressed very well.
The internal surface of the ring exhibits a large number of file marks. No inscription appears to be present.
The ring measures: 24.77mm external diameter, 21.27mm internal diameter, 4.52mm width and 1.83mm thick. It weighs 2.9 grams.
Several comparative examples have been recorded. WMID-6296C3 is of a similar style, although the decoration is slightly different, was recovered from a site in Staffordshire as well. Excavations in London have turned up similar examples, with a similar style of decoration but without the prominent ridge. (Pritchard, 2002, p332, examples 1627 and 1629). The two examples from London came from contexts dated to the 15th Century.
