Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unidentified wrought iron object of uncertain dating. It is triangular in plan, and circular in cross section. It consists of a hollow cone shape, made from a sheet of iron wrapped together and then fixed. It measures 62.77mm in length, 13.23mm diameter wide at the top, and 3.77mm diameter wide at the bottom. It weighs 20.5 grams. It is a mid to dark brown colour, with an even surface patina. The iron oxide corrosion layer is flaking off in a couple of areas, revealing the dark brown of the underlying metal. These areas should be monitored carefully to prevent fu…

A complete circular, probably wrought iron disk, of uncertain dating, but probably Post Medieval to Modern (AD 1700 to AD 1900). The iron disk is circular in plan, and rectangular in section. No decoration is present on either surface. It has a diameter of 21.10 mm and is 4.26 mm thick. It weighs 3.4 g. Both surfaces of the disk are covered with a layer of a corrosion product (iron oxide commonly known as rust). Due to the corrosion product, it is hard to determine what the original function of this artefact was. It was possibly a coin or token but other identifications and func…

An incomplete iron rowel spur of Post Medieval to Early Modern dating (18th to 19th Centuries). Around 75% of the spur is present. Neither arm is complete. The neck and rowel box are complete.  The arms have a lenticular cross section and are missing both terminals. The neck and rowel box are 29.8 mm in length with cylindrical cross section. It measures 53.1 mm in length, 62.9 mm wide and 11.0 mm thick. It weighs 19.1 g. The spur is a dark brown colour, with an uneven patina. The spur would benefit from being kept in a dry box.  A similar iron spur has bee…

An incomplete wrought iron flat leaf shaped blade, of uncertain dating but probably Post Medieval to Modern (AD 1700 to AD 1900). The artefact has a flat leaf shaped blade, with integral square sectioned tang. A ridge is present on side of the blade, near to the junction with the tang. No central ridge is present on either side of the blade. The top exhibits a rounded, blunt point, not a sharp one. The tang is incomplete with an old, pre-depositional break at the bottom. It measures 113.84 mm in length, 35.14 mm wide and 8.20 mm thick. It weighs 50.2 g. The artefact is a light t…

A fragment of Iron bloomery slag. The fragment measures 34.03mm long by 29.37m wide and 12.87mm thick. It weighs 16.5 grams. The process of smelting iron ore to produce iron has not changed much from the Iron Age to the Medieval period, so this piece of bloomery slag could date from any time between the Iron Age (800 BC) to the Medieval Period (1500 AD).

A fragment of Iron bloomery slag. The fragment measures 35.12mm long by 29.00mm wide by 17.21mm thick. It weighs 26.5g. The Iron rich slag exhibits a large number of air bubbles and is relatively heavy in relation to its size. The process of smelting iron ore to produce iron has not changed much from the Iron Age to the Medieval period.

Three irregular fragments of iron bloomery waste (slag) or fuel ash, of Iron Age to Late Medieval dating (800 BC to AD 1600). All three fragments are light for their size, which would suggest that minimal iron metal is present within the matrix. All have a honeycomb structure, formed of solidified air bubbles. The measurements are as follows: 1: Length: 24.53 mm. Width: 23.04 mm. Thickness: 15.25 mm. Weight: 3.8 g. 2: Length: 50.57 mm. Width; 31.64 mm. Thickness: 21.75 mm. Weight: 10.1 g. 3: Length: 31.00 mm. Width: 25.66 mm. Thickness: 19.56 mm. Weight: 11.7 g. All together t…
