An incomplete cast copper alloy rim fragment from a copper alloy large posnet or cauldron of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (1400 - 1700 AD).
The rim fragment is irregular in plan, but rectangular in cross section. The internal surface is smooth, whereas the exterior is rough, with frequent small horizontal lines / ridges present. The rim type is that of a rounded type with an internal lip. The fragment has broken at the shoulder of the vessel, where the rim begins to turn outwards, which is known to be a weak point. A casting seam is present on the internal su…

An incomplete cast copper alloy rim fragment from a copper alloy large posnet or cauldron of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (1400 - 1700 AD).
The rim fragment is irregular in plan, but rectangular in cross section. The internal surface is smooth, whereas a subtle ridge is present running vertically on the exterior. A short section of rim is present at the top of the fragment and is of the rounded rim type. Not enough is present to estimate the original diameter, however the size and profile would suggest that it came from a large posnet or cauldron (See Fig 1 in But…

It is a mid to dark green colour, with an patchy but even surface patina. The patina has flaked away in a couple of locations, and is a lighter green in those areas. The artefact should be stored in a dry environment and these area…

Above the ridge there is a line of impressed marks forming an abstract design that vaguely resembles letters. The distance between the rounded rim and the rib is 22.2mm. It is estimated the outer diameter of the rim would have been c. 60.0mm when complete. The breaks are sharp. 43.0 x 39.9 x 6.8mm. W…
