The obverse reads: FRANCIS ELLIOT around the initials F W E in the centre, separated by pellets. The reverse reads: IN LEICESTER 1655 around the initials F W E. The initial mark is a five pointed star or mullet on both the obverse and reverse. A complete copper alloy halfpenny trade token, of 17th Century AD dating (AD 1650 to AD 1680). The token is heavily worn but it is possible to read [ ]COTT[ ]ELL on the obverse and BACONS[ ] on the reverse. This would identify the token as a half penny token issued by an John Cotterell initially of London, but evidence could suggest it coming from Bacon's Inn in Warwickshire (Dickinson (1986), p 101, no 105). Parts of the inscription can be read on the obverse and reverse. The obverse reads: HIS. HALF. PENY [ ]. The reverse reads [ ]OF. WORCESTER. The initial mark is a five petalled flower. These inscriptions are suggestive that this token may have originally been issued by Will Swift, of Worcester in AD 1662 (Williamson, p 496, no 107). It has a diameter of 18.6 mm, and is 1.1 mm thick. It weighs 1.1 g.
