The sherd consists of a bodysherd, in a dark micaeous rich fabric, with an organic temper. The exterior of the sherd has two rows of decoration. The top row consists of three (3) circular wheel stamps with a central cross, splitting the circle into four approximately equal sized quadrants. An incomplete chip carved cast copper alloy artefact, of uncertain function and dating, but possibly Early Medieval (AD 400 to AD 700). The fragment is sub rectangular in plan, and rectangular in section. Both ends are incomplete, with an old predepositional break. One long edge is straight with a concave indentation. A fragment of probable silver inlay. It consists of thin piece of silver metal, decorated on one side. The lower edge is curved. The decoration consists of crossing fleur-de-lys or leaf-tendrils forming an inward pointing triangle in which is a further leaf-motif. This decoration is set against a back-ground of roughly incised lines which could represent the keying for enamel or niello inlay although the cells lack sufficient depth to retain inlay.
