The leather strap would have been attached to the strap end by rivets. The back part of the V shaped union is present, the front plate is missing. Both of the attachment holes on the back plate are partial. Both the front and rear of the strap end have suffered from a high degree of abrasion (caused by movement in the plough soil), this has lead to a loss of surface detail. The front was probably originally decorated with a zoomorphic style design, however all traces of the design has been lost due to abrasion. It is hard to determine if the back of the strap end was decorated or not.\n\n\n\nThe strap end is a dark green colour, with remnants of an even surface patina. A high degree of abrasion has affecting the surface, resulting in a loss of detail in the design.\n\n\n\nThe strap end measures 35.91mm in length, 10.36mm wide and 1.90mm thick. Iron corrosion products present have obscured the original shape of the probable suspension loop.\n\n\nNo decoration is present on the weight. It weighs 46.6 grams (1.65 oz).\n\n\nWeights of this style are frequently encountered, and commonly thought to be of Medieval dating. The iron suspension loop would have aided safe-keeping and storage. Similar weights with iron suspension loops have been dated to the medieval period (Biggs, 1992). A similar weight was published as #76 in Biggs & Withers (2000, p32), although it is more cyclindrial in shape. They have identified it as a probable steelyard poise. However a similar weight with a copper alloy suspension loop was found on the Isle of Man in association with a balance. This example was dated to 8th or 9th Centuries AD (Skinner & Bruce-Mitford, 1940, fig XV), and it was suggested it would have converted the equal arm balance into a form of steelyard.\n\n\nLead weights, due to be a functional artefact, do change little in style over time, and as such can be hard to date accurately. Little study has been done to date on typological studies to confirm the dating of different styles. However it is reasonable to assume that this weight is probably Medieval in dating.\n\n\nReference:\n\nBiggs,N. 1992 'English Weights - an illustrated survey' p40-41\n\nBiggs, N. & Withers, P. 2000. The four arms of the cross are raised up from the central circle, with triangular ends pointing into the centre of the distributor. The far end of each arm is circular in shape. A separate copper alloy strap attachment is folded around the recessed section between two of the arms of the cross. The strap attachment has one sub circular terminal, which has an intergral circular sectioned rivet on the reverse. The other terminal is flattened, with a notch in which the rivet rests. The terminals are linked by a narrow, straight sided rectangular sectioned bar, folded around the centre of the distributor.\n\n\n\nThe strap distributor is a mid to dark brown colour, with an patchy surface patina. It has suffered from a minor degree of abrasion, with little signs of active corrosion present.\n\n\n\nThe strap distributor measures 34.16mm in length, 35.00mm wide and 3.47mm thick. The strap attachment measures 14.22mm in length, 5.31mm wide (max) and 8.63mm thick. Together they both weigh 6.1 grams.\n\n\n\nOther types of strap distributors have been recorded on the PAS database, including a similar but incomplete example from Weybridge in Surrey. A similar example found at Middle Harling, Norfolk, also with one surviving strap-attachment folded around the bar, was mis-identified as a horse-harness pendant (Margeson in Rogerson 1995, p. 68, fig. 51, cat. no. 129). Other examples have been found with up to four strap-attachments (e.g. a gilded example from Stoke Holy Cross, Norfolk) making the identification as strap-distributors certain. It is angled forwards, with an oval pierced loop (now incomplete).\n\r\n\r\n\nThe front of the pendant features moulded heraldic decoration in the form of three lions passant guardant, arranged one above the other. This decoration is set within an inlaid red enamel background. In heraldic terms, it is described as \"Gules three lions passant guardant [Or]\".\n\r\n\r\n\nThe back of the pendant is plain and undecorated. The right side and parts of the lower side are missing, presumably lost in antiquity. It would appear that the furniture fitting had been bent in half, as the remnants of the fold is present down the centre of the fitting.\n\n\n\nThe furniture fitting is sub circular in plan, with two convex circular knops present; one at 12 o'clock and one at 9 o'clock. The remnants of a central circular hole \/ perforation is present. This would presumably have been for fixing the decorative device to the required piece of furniture. The convex knops are probably to hide the tops of nails on the piece of furniture. The lower left hand edge has been damaged, resulting in the loss of the original edge in this area.\n\n\n\nThe front has been decorated with both surface gilding and ring and dot punched decoration. From the outside, working inwards, the decoration consists of an outer circular border, with incised lines delimiting it. A row of ring & dot \/ annulets is present within this outer border. The border is positioned at the base of the convex knops. Then there is a plain circular band separating the central design. The central design consists of what would have originally been a Six pointed star. Incised lines \/ grooves mark out the star design. Between each of the points, more ring and dot \/ annulet decoration is present, filling in the background. Traces of gilding are still present on the front of the fitting, remaining mainly on the smooth, unstamped surfaces. It is probable that the entirety of the front would have been covered by this gilding. The reverse of the fitting is plain and undecorated.\n\n\n\nThe fitting is predominantly a mid green colour, with an even surface patina. Patches of a dark, almost blackish surface discolouration are present, mainly on the reverse of the fitting. This is probably due to abrasion causing by movement in the plough soil, removing parts of the original surface and decoration (gilding).\n\n\n\nThe fitting measures 45.98mm in length, 27.33 wide and 1.14mm thick. It weighs 3.8 grams.\n\n\n\nThe furniture fitting is probably of Post Medieval dating, most likely 16th to 17th Centuries in dating. No direct parallel has yet been found for this style of decoration and shape of furniture but it is similar in style to several already recorded on the PAS database (NMS-25A667 from Postwick, Norfolk and NMS-5470A8 from Upwell, Norfolk). The edges of the rectangular suspension loop have been bevelled. The body of the bell has broken across one half of the upper section, resulting in the loss of one side of the mouth. The internal surface exhibits a couple of areas of reddish brown surface deposits, probably from the original iron pea, which is no longer present.\n\n\n\nThe bell was cast in one piece, using two opposing moulds. This casting method is indicated by the present of two 'sound holes' (internal diameter 3.4mm) which are primarily to assist the positioning of the sand core. This sand core to allow the bell to be cast in one piece as opposed to cast in two separate halves and soldered togther. These two part moulds are split at the central girth rib, and no vertical mould lines are present. The central girth rib performs a useful purpose of accommodating any minor misalignments between the two halves, along with strengthening the bell and preserving the original appearance. \n\n\n\nBoth the upper and lower hemispheres have been decorated. The bell still retains traces of surface silvering or tinning from a white metal. However the majority of this has been worn away, either through use or by surface abrasion caused by movement in the plough soil.\n\n\n\nThe bell is a light green \/ silvery grey colour, with an even surface patina.\n\n\n\nIt measures 38.09mm in length, 30.23mm wide and 24.99mm thick. However the style continues in use until the late 18th Century, so the bell could be of any date from within that timeframe. The base of the shank has broken across the attachment loop, which is now incomplete.\n\n\n\nThe head is oval in plan and cross section. The shank is sub rectangular in plan and rectangular \/ flat in cross section. The head is of the plain \/ globular \/ biconvex style, with no trace of decoration remaining. The shank was cast integrally and consists of a flat sub rectangular plate, located centrally on the rear of the button. The shank has been set at right angles to the long axis of the head.\n\n\n\nThe button is a dark mid green colour with predominately an even surface patina. Along the edges, there are a few areas of light green discoloration, where the surface patina has been displaced. These areas are signs of active corrosion occurring, and to prevent further deterioration of the artefact, it should be stored in a dry acid-free environment (Stewart box, acid-free tissue and silica gel).\n\n\n\nThe button measures 10.16mm in length, 9.29mm wide and 8.29mm thick. The head measures 9.29mm (long axis) long by 8.26mm (short axis) wide. The shank is incomplete. It weighs 2.0 grams.\n\n\n\nFrom excavations in London, eight cast buttons were excavated, either from Ceramic phases 7\/8 (c.1200-c.1260 AD) or from Ceramic phases 11\/12 (c.1350-c.1450 AD) (Egan, 1991, p274). None are copper alloy, like this example or a of direct decorative comparative example, however they are of the same manufacturing method (solid buttons with integral shank, cast from three part moulds), so presumably of a similar dating and functionality. Bailey suggests that buttons of this style are more consistent with Tudor dating (Late 15th to 16th Centuries AD (Bailey, 2004, p29), and this date range is consistent with the majority of examples recorded on the PAS database. Therefore this button is probably more likely of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (15th to 16th Centuries AD) than earlier, but earlier dating due to changes in fashion is still a possibility.\n\n\n\nReferences:\n\nEgan, G. 1991. It was originally square sectioned. Now it is sub rectangular in plan and irregular in cross section, having broken across both the length and the width of the pommel. The top would originally have been domed, possibly with a central hole to secure the tang of the blade. The top has been decorated with a ridged foliate (leaves) design. Large leaves (with multiple veins) are angled into the corners, with a smaller leaf inbetween them, along the side.\n\n\n\nThe sides are sub rectangular in plan, flaring out to the wider top. Each side has been decorated with the same design.
