An incomplete copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill of Roman dating AD 80 to AD120. Around 25% of the brooch is present, consisting of the bow. The wings, spring, pin, foot and catch plate are missing, presumed lost in antiquity. The bow is angular and hump back, resembling a comma. It is broken around 1/3 of its length. It has been struck from a prepared core, when reducing down a nodule to form a core tool. There is retouch to the ventral face along one edge (short, abrupt, parallel). Probably made for a specific task and then discarded. It measures 32.6 mm in length, a maximum width of 21.2 mm and is 9.2 mm thick. It weighs 5.3 g. The flint is a mid to dark brown colour, with little surface patination.
