Object type: GUNFLINT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Post Medieval gunflint with lead casing from a flintlock gun. The flint is square in plan and is enclosed on both faces and one side by a sub-rectangular folded lead holder. The three visible edges of the flint show signs of working, both controlled and uncontrolled fractures, the other edge is obscured. The edges of the lead are rounded and there is a small hole present in the folded side of the lead holder. This hole was presumably part of the mounting mechanism. A hairline crack is present along the fold. The gunflint measures 22.60mm long, 24.24mm wide and …

A flake of tertiary debitage, dating from the Middle to Late Neolithic (c. 3000 BC - c. 2200 BC). The flake is sub oval in plan and oval in cross section. The ventral surface displays a couple of deliberately flake scars, and there is probable deliberate retouch around the edge. The flint is of a poor quality with several flaws, which resulted in hinge fracturing. Uncontrolled fractures due to plough roll and movement in the soil has meant that the controlled flake scars are hard to determine. The flake is a light grey to white colour, with orange spots. The opaque surface…

A flake of secondary debitage, probably of Early Neolithic dating (c. 4000 BC - c. 2500 BC). The flake is sub triangular in plan, and roughly D shaped in cross section. The ventral (upper) surface demonstrates several longitudinal flake scars, along with a couple of lateral ones. Less than 50% of the ventral (upper) surface is covered in cortex (outer rind) indicating that is a debitage flake from the secondary phase of working. The dorsal (lower) surface exhibits a couple of transverse controlled flake scars near the top of the flake. Several uncontrolled fractures a…

A knapped flint discoidal scraper or knife of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (2900 - 1600 BC). The scraper is broadly oval in plan and lentoid in cross section, formed from a teritary flake. The upper / dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a central ridge. The lower / ventral surface exhibits a series of irregular and uncontrolled flake scars, suggesting movement and damage in the plough soil. The edges of the scraper demonstrates signs of retouch with indirect percussion. Some are uncontrolled in nature, but others are well spaced and neat, creating a serrated edge. Little…

A complete worked / knapped flint flake / tertiary debitage, of probable Neolithic dating (c. 3500 BC to c. 2100 BC). The flake is sub oval in plan, and lentoid in cross section. The ventral (upper) surface exhibits one longituditional flake scar and several diagonal ones. Evidence of controlled flaking is present along a couple of the edges, indicating retouch. The dorsal (lower) surface is smooth, and exhibits a bulb of percussion and conchoidal ripples. The flake measures 44.85 mm in length, 23.30 mm wide and 5.33 mm thick. It weighs 4.6 g. The flake is a mid brown colour. No…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped / flaked flint end scraper or knife of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (2900 BC - 1600 BC).i The scraper is broadly oval in plan and lentoid in cross section, formed from a tertiary debitage flake. The upper / dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a central ridge. The lower / ventral surface exhibits the remnants of a bulb of percussion and conchoidal ripples. There are a couple of irregular and uncontrolled flake scars, suggesting movement and damage in the plough soil. The edges of the scraper demonstrate evidence of retouch with indirect percussion. Some …

A complete knapped / flaked secondary debitage flake, of Neolithic dating (3100 BC to 1600 BC). The flake is sub circular in plan, and is lentoid in section. Less than 50% of the dorsal (upper) face is covered with cortex (outer rind), indicating it is a secondary debitage flake. The dorsal (upper) face exhibits a series of ridges, and small controlled flint scars along the edges, indicating retouch. The ventral (lower) face exhibits a bulb of percussion, conchoidal ripples and a probable striking platform as evidence of working. The flake measures 26.55 mm in length, 25.97 mm wi…

A complete knapped discoindal scraper of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date, circa 2900-1600BC. The scraper is broadly oval in plan and lentoid in cross section, formed from a tertiary flake. The upper / dorsal face of the scraper exhibits evidence of retouching on all edges. The lower / ventral surface has evidence remains of both the bulb of percussion and striking platform. Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped or flaked flint leaf shaped arrowhead, of Neolithic dating (c. 3500 BC to c. 2500 BC). The arrowhead is approximately 90% complete, missing the pointed tip. The arrowhead is leaf shaped in plan, and would have consisted of a pointed oval shape with a semi circular base. It has been made from a piece of tertiary debitage as no cortex (outer rind) is present on either the dorsal (upper) or ventral (lower) faces. Both faces exhibit a large amount of controlled flaking, with retouch present along the edges. It measures 29.9 mm in length, 18.9 mm wide and 3.3 mm

A complete knapped / worked flint scraper, of Late Neolithic dating (2900 BC to 2000 BC). The scraper is broadly semi circular in plan and rectangular in cross section being formed from a tertiary flake; possibly debitage. The upper / dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a series of irregular flake scars suggesting that this piece has been removed from a larger flake and been subsequently reused. The striking platform and the bulb of percussion are no longer present on the lower / ventral face, having been removed by a hinge fracture. The edges of the dorsal face have all be retouch…
